Chapter 38
Arms loaded with shopping bags, Teresa strode back into Narcigh by herself. Miriam observed as she let the bags fall onto the couch with a thud.
โI got you these from the mall. Jonathan insisted on paying,โ Teresa said, her tone casual.
Miriamโs eyes popped. โYour ex-husband sure knows how to treat people. Why didnโt he drive you back?โ she asked, a playful grin on her face.
Teresaโs brow furrowed slightly as she gave a dismissive shrug. โWho knows whatโs bugging him? Maybe heโs hitting a mid-life crisis early,โ she joked.
Miriam nearly choked on her drink. At twenty-nine, Jonathan was far from being ancient.
Teresa let the comment slide and moved on to check on Michael. Sheโd been worried Jonathan might see their son, so sheโd arranged for Miriam to take him back to Narcigh before Jonathan could spot him.
That night, while Teresa was absorbed in managing her online shop, Michael snuck up behind her and hugged her neck, reminding her, โMommy, you promised me three wishes. You havenโt even asked about them.โ
Teresa leaned in with a teasing smile. โHit me up. What are your top three wishes!โ
Michael took a moment, his eyes lighting up as he decided. โFried chicken, thatโs my first!โ
Teresa chuckled and proposed, โWe could totally order some and have a cozy dinner at home. How does that sound?โ
โGreat!โ Michael exclaimed with a nod.
With a hint of expectation in her voice, Teresa pressed, โAlright, what about your second wish?โ She had a feeling it might be about her finding a new partner.
Michael surprised her with his thoughtful reply. โI wish you wouldnโt stay up so late. You should be in bed by eleven, no more of this all-nighter work.โ
Teresa was taken aback, her eyes brimming with emotion. She replied affectionately, her voice wavering, โIโll make sure to rest more, I promise.โ
With curiosity piqued, Teresa asked, โAnd your third wish?โ
Michaelโs smile stretched from ear to ear, his eyes nearly lost in the grin. โI want you to find me a new dad, pronto!โ
Teresaโs smile ebbed away at the answer sheโd anticipated. She draped her arm over his shoulder. โAbsolutely, kiddo. Weโre gonna find you a stepdad whoโs kind, caring, and a total hottieโone whoโll treat us like royalty.โ
Michael looked up at Teresa, his eyes full of curiosity. โMommy, what did my real dad look like?โ
Teresaโs expression flickered as she responded, โLike I always say, he wasnโt exactly a looker.โ
Michael whispered, โSo, he was like Shrek?โ
Teresa offered a wry smile. โLetโs say he was a bit more appealing than Shrek.โ
โHuh?โ Michael slipped away from Teresa, raced to the mirror, and examined his reflection. โBut I think Iโm pretty handsome.โ
Teresaโs grin grew, filled with maternal pride. โOf course you are, sweetie. Youโve got Mommyโs stellar genes.โ
Michael, gazing intently from Teresa to his mirror image, said earnestly, โMommy, we donโt look alike at all.โ
Teresa was caught off guard. โDonโt worry. Youโll fill out your looks soon enough. Youโll be the mirror image of Mommy then,โ she explained with a warm smile.
There was a quiet, โFine,โ in return.
Back in Narcigh, Jonathan was at a ritzy dinner party with Benny, where he was gulping down his drinks one after another.
Chapter 38
Benny, picking up on Jonathanโs dark mood, cautiously offered, โWant me to reach out to Teresa?โ
At the sound of her name, Jonathanโs expression turned sour. โNo need. Sheโs not my wife anymore.โ
Benny, sensing something was amiss, probed further, โSo whatโs the deal? You made a fortune and hurried back. Wasnโt it to mend things? I can tell thereโs still a spark between you two.โ
โSpark? Really?โ Jonathan scoffed, his voice laced with sarcasm. โHow did you tell that? Loveโs been out the window for a long time now.โ He drained his wineglass in one go.
