Chapter 374
Jennifer was distracted throughout the meal. As Sanford prepared to leave, she walked him out.
โMy engagement ceremony is the day after tomorrow. Make sure to be on time,โ she said.
โOf course. Otherwise, why would I come see you?โ Sanford joked. โI also want to check out your gorgeous sister.โ
Jennifer had told Sanford about her younger sister, Teresa, and her striking beauty and charm. Sanford wanted to meet Teresa, but Jennifer dismissed the idea. Perhaps it would help get them together, which would be better than Teresa marrying Irene's son, she thought.
She arrived home a short while later. After putting the dishes away, Donald said, โI saw that little kid again while shopping today.โ
โOh, really? What happened next?โ Before Jennifer could ask if heโd pulled a hair from the childโs head, Donald confessed.
โI pulled a hair from that kid. I want to do a DNA test.โ
โDonald, youโโ
โJust hear me out,โ he said calmly. โI have my reasons. Remember Everport? I distinctly heard Michael calling Teresa โMom.โ Also, Cathy told Teresa she heard a voice calling Teresa โMom.โ Plus, today, that kid was wearing a short-sleeved shirt with Jonathanโs signature. I was shocked.โ He revealed all his suspicions to his future wife without reservation.
Jenniferโs eyes darted around, and she spoke calmly, โSo, you suspect that kid is Teresaโs and Jonathanโs? I know Teresa well enough; she wouldnโt have a child with her ex.โ
โMaybe Teresa is hiding something from you, and weโre both in the dark,โ Donald said, wrapping his arms around Jenniferโs shoulders as they continued discussing. โYouโve seen that kid, right? Think about it: doesnโt he look like Jonathan?โ
โI donโt think so. You must be mistaken,โ Jennifer said, turning toward her room. Donald followed closely, half-believing. He wondered, Am I really wrong?
โJennifer, if weโre happy, and Teresa and Jonathan get back together, thatโs great. You wouldnโt have to worry anymore, would you?โ
Jennifer shot him a sarcastic glance. โIf Teresa were happy with Jonathan, she wouldnโt have divorced him. With someone like Irene in the picture, I wonโt let Teresa repeat the same mistakes.โ
Donald sighed. โIrene is hard to talk about, but Jonathan is a good person. He doesnโt have any scandals and has always cared for Teresa.โ
Jennifer pursed her lips, wishing Jonathan did have a few scandals. That way, she would have a better excuse to oppose Teresa getting back together with him.
Donald was still caught up in his theories. โI still think thereโs a strong chance that kid is Jonathanโs.โ
โCan you stop it? The day after tomorrow is our engagement ceremony, and youโre still rambling on about this.โ
โThe engagement ceremony wonโt be affected,โ Donald laughed. โJonathan has always treated me well. If that child happens to be Jonathanโs, Iโd want to help him out.โ
Jennifer was exasperated. โYou really are too naive.โ
But reality wasnโt as bright as Donald believed, even if Jennifer appreciated his rare qualities.
โI advise you to think carefully about this. Donโt go pulling your brotherโs hair, or theyโll call you crazy,โ Donald said. โBut weโre together. If that boy really is Jonathan and Teresaโs, our DNA test will validate it.โ
Jennifer remained silent for a few seconds. โFine, since you doubt it so much, let me handle the DNA test.โ Without the test, Donald wouldnโt give up, and I have to completely extinguish his hopes, she thought.
Donald kissed Jennifer on the cheek. โThanks, my love. Iโll plan our engagement ceremony.โ Jennifer savored his kiss as he helped her out of her clothes.
The next day, trusting and naive, Donald confidently gave Jennifer Michaelโs hair for testing.
Jennifer said she would do two tests: one for the kid and Donald, and one for him and herself.
โOnce the results are in, Iโll let you know,โ Jennifer said.
โOkay, if the child is Jonathanโs, weโll discuss it together,โ Donald replied.
Jennifer turned and headed to the hospital. Donald didnโt go to the hospital; instead, he went to prepare for the engagement ceremony.
Teresa called Jennifer, asking what was happening. She wondered if Donald had taken any concrete action regarding the DNA test.
Jennifer stood outside the genetics department. โIโm getting ready for theโฆโ
Teresa asked, โWhat do you mean?โ
Jennifer replied, โIf I donโt do this test, Donald wonโt give up. I found out last night that heโs suspected Michaelโs identity several times already. His pulling Michaelโs hair isnโt just a whim.โ
Teresa said, โSo, are you going to swap identities again? Are you going to fake the report again? You really donโt care about your medical license?โ
Jennifer asserted, โIโll soon be family with Donald. Even if he finds out, he wonโt hold it against me.โ
Teresa retorted, โIs that so? If youโre not afraid of being exposed, why are you so careful with Donald? Youโre clearly scared; scared that Donald will reject you, scared youโll lose your medical license, and scared youโll end up with nothing.โ
โEnough,โ Jennifer interrupted Teresa. โJust like you said, we have to stick with our choices. Thereโs no turning back, Teresa.โ
Teresa suddenly fell silent. After a moment, she spoke uneasily, โLet me be honest, Iโm really tired of this life, Hannah. Trust me just once. Jonathan wonโt hold you responsible, and Donald will understand. You donโt need to fake another paternity test. Youโre a doctor.โ
โNo way, I canโt confess,โ Jennifer was resolute. โUnless we give up our dignity, do you want Irene to laugh at us and steal your child? I donโt believe Jonathan wonโt pursue my responsibility. I only became a deputy director because of him, even if I donโt care about his connections.โ
โHannah!โ
โTeresa, Iโm your sister. Listen to me!โ Jennifer interrupted. โListen to me. We can only go on like this. Once I get married, everything will be fine. Your ex-husband will leave Nareigh. Heโll definitely find another woman to remarry and have kids. Men are like that; he canโt be childless forever.โ
