Chapter 374

Jennifer was distracted throughout the meal. As Sanford prepared to leave, she walked him out.

โ€œMy engagement ceremony is the day after tomorrow. Make sure to be on time,โ€ she said.

โ€œOf course. Otherwise, why would I come see you?โ€ Sanford joked. โ€œI also want to check out your gorgeous sister.โ€

Jennifer had told Sanford about her younger sister, Teresa, and her striking beauty and charm. Sanford wanted to meet Teresa, but Jennifer dismissed the idea. Perhaps it would help get them together, which would be better than Teresa marrying Irene's son, she thought.

She arrived home a short while later. After putting the dishes away, Donald said, โ€œI saw that little kid again while shopping today.โ€

โ€œOh, really? What happened next?โ€ Before Jennifer could ask if heโ€™d pulled a hair from the childโ€™s head, Donald confessed.

โ€œI pulled a hair from that kid. I want to do a DNA test.โ€

โ€œDonald, youโ€”โ€

โ€œJust hear me out,โ€ he said calmly. โ€œI have my reasons. Remember Everport? I distinctly heard Michael calling Teresa โ€˜Mom.โ€™ Also, Cathy told Teresa she heard a voice calling Teresa โ€˜Mom.โ€™ Plus, today, that kid was wearing a short-sleeved shirt with Jonathanโ€™s signature. I was shocked.โ€ He revealed all his suspicions to his future wife without reservation.

Jenniferโ€™s eyes darted around, and she spoke calmly, โ€œSo, you suspect that kid is Teresaโ€™s and Jonathanโ€™s? I know Teresa well enough; she wouldnโ€™t have a child with her ex.โ€

โ€œMaybe Teresa is hiding something from you, and weโ€™re both in the dark,โ€ Donald said, wrapping his arms around Jenniferโ€™s shoulders as they continued discussing. โ€œYouโ€™ve seen that kid, right? Think about it: doesnโ€™t he look like Jonathan?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think so. You must be mistaken,โ€ Jennifer said, turning toward her room. Donald followed closely, half-believing. He wondered, Am I really wrong?

โ€œJennifer, if weโ€™re happy, and Teresa and Jonathan get back together, thatโ€™s great. You wouldnโ€™t have to worry anymore, would you?โ€

Jennifer shot him a sarcastic glance. โ€œIf Teresa were happy with Jonathan, she wouldnโ€™t have divorced him. With someone like Irene in the picture, I wonโ€™t let Teresa repeat the same mistakes.โ€

Donald sighed. โ€œIrene is hard to talk about, but Jonathan is a good person. He doesnโ€™t have any scandals and has always cared for Teresa.โ€

Jennifer pursed her lips, wishing Jonathan did have a few scandals. That way, she would have a better excuse to oppose Teresa getting back together with him.

Donald was still caught up in his theories. โ€œI still think thereโ€™s a strong chance that kid is Jonathanโ€™s.โ€

โ€œCan you stop it? The day after tomorrow is our engagement ceremony, and youโ€™re still rambling on about this.โ€

โ€œThe engagement ceremony wonโ€™t be affected,โ€ Donald laughed. โ€œJonathan has always treated me well. If that child happens to be Jonathanโ€™s, Iโ€™d want to help him out.โ€

Jennifer was exasperated. โ€œYou really are too naive.โ€

But reality wasnโ€™t as bright as Donald believed, even if Jennifer appreciated his rare qualities.

โ€œI advise you to think carefully about this. Donโ€™t go pulling your brotherโ€™s hair, or theyโ€™ll call you crazy,โ€ Donald said. โ€œBut weโ€™re together. If that boy really is Jonathan and Teresaโ€™s, our DNA test will validate it.โ€

Jennifer remained silent for a few seconds. โ€œFine, since you doubt it so much, let me handle the DNA test.โ€ Without the test, Donald wouldnโ€™t give up, and I have to completely extinguish his hopes, she thought.

Donald kissed Jennifer on the cheek. โ€œThanks, my love. Iโ€™ll plan our engagement ceremony.โ€ Jennifer savored his kiss as he helped her out of her clothes.

The next day, trusting and naive, Donald confidently gave Jennifer Michaelโ€™s hair for testing.

Jennifer said she would do two tests: one for the kid and Donald, and one for him and herself.

โ€œOnce the results are in, Iโ€™ll let you know,โ€ Jennifer said.

โ€œOkay, if the child is Jonathanโ€™s, weโ€™ll discuss it together,โ€ Donald replied.

Jennifer turned and headed to the hospital. Donald didnโ€™t go to the hospital; instead, he went to prepare for the engagement ceremony.

Teresa called Jennifer, asking what was happening. She wondered if Donald had taken any concrete action regarding the DNA test.

Jennifer stood outside the genetics department. โ€œIโ€™m getting ready for theโ€ฆโ€

Teresa asked, โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

Jennifer replied, โ€œIf I donโ€™t do this test, Donald wonโ€™t give up. I found out last night that heโ€™s suspected Michaelโ€™s identity several times already. His pulling Michaelโ€™s hair isnโ€™t just a whim.โ€

Teresa said, โ€œSo, are you going to swap identities again? Are you going to fake the report again? You really donโ€™t care about your medical license?โ€

Jennifer asserted, โ€œIโ€™ll soon be family with Donald. Even if he finds out, he wonโ€™t hold it against me.โ€

Teresa retorted, โ€œIs that so? If youโ€™re not afraid of being exposed, why are you so careful with Donald? Youโ€™re clearly scared; scared that Donald will reject you, scared youโ€™ll lose your medical license, and scared youโ€™ll end up with nothing.โ€

โ€œEnough,โ€ Jennifer interrupted Teresa. โ€œJust like you said, we have to stick with our choices. Thereโ€™s no turning back, Teresa.โ€

Teresa suddenly fell silent. After a moment, she spoke uneasily, โ€œLet me be honest, Iโ€™m really tired of this life, Hannah. Trust me just once. Jonathan wonโ€™t hold you responsible, and Donald will understand. You donโ€™t need to fake another paternity test. Youโ€™re a doctor.โ€

โ€œNo way, I canโ€™t confess,โ€ Jennifer was resolute. โ€œUnless we give up our dignity, do you want Irene to laugh at us and steal your child? I donโ€™t believe Jonathan wonโ€™t pursue my responsibility. I only became a deputy director because of him, even if I donโ€™t care about his connections.โ€

โ€œHannah!โ€

โ€œTeresa, Iโ€™m your sister. Listen to me!โ€ Jennifer interrupted. โ€œListen to me. We can only go on like this. Once I get married, everything will be fine. Your ex-husband will leave Nareigh. Heโ€™ll definitely find another woman to remarry and have kids. Men are like that; he canโ€™t be childless forever.โ€
