Cathy glanced at her husband, Werner, hoping he would intercede. Werner spoke. โDad, just bring Cheryl. Forget about Teresa; Jonathanโs already here. It would be too awkward if she came.โ
โJonathan can leave. Teresa needs to be here,โ Hayden insisted, his expression unwavering. โToday, everyone has to be present. If even one is missing, I wonโt eat.โ
โEven if you made fools of yourselves in front of Evelyn, it has nothing to do with me. You figure it out,โ he added.
Werner and Cathy exchanged helpless looks. They had no choice but to call Teresa, who again refused.
โMrs. Lynn, Jonathan is there, and so is Irene. Itโs just too awkward for me to go. My mom is already there, right? Her presence is enough. She can speak for me,โ Teresa said.
โItโs Mr. Hayden Lynnโs wish. He misses you and wants to see you. He insists that you come over,โ Cathy replied.
โMrs. Lynn, please tell Mr. Hayden Lynn Iโm really sorry, but I canโt make it today,โ Teresa said before hanging up.
Shortly after, Cheryl called. โTeresa, what should I do? Itโs the first time the two families are meeting for dinner, and I said I wouldnโt come back, but Grandpa insists I return and even wants to send someone to get me. Teresa, you have to help me. You have to talk to Grandpa for me.โ
โHow can I help when Iโm not even there?โ Teresa replied.
โOh?โ Cheryl was on the verge of tears. โI thought you were there. Grandpa dotes on you and listens to you. I definitely canโt go back now. What if my water breaks on the way? What do I do?โ
โSorry. Why donโt you talk to Jennifer? She may help,โ Teresa suggested.
โJennifer is so harsh. I never chat with her. I donโt even know what Donald sees in her. All I can do is wish Donald well. What am I supposed to do?โ Cheryl wailed.
If the Lynn family took Cheryl back now, everything would be ruined.
Teresa said, โTough luck.โ
Cheryl huffed. โTeresa, donโt be like that. Weโre in this together. If I canโt keep my secret, I wonโt be able to keep Mikeโs secret either.โ
โAre you threatening me, Cheryl?โ Teresa said, taken aback.
โWe both are in the same boat. You know what I mean, right?โ Cheryl replied.
Teresa was momentarily stunned.
At the restaurant, Cathy told Hayden the truth. Hayden took the phone and spoke to Teresa.
Teresa thought it was still Cathy calling, but she heard Haydenโs voice. โTeresa, itโs me. Are you really not coming? Jennifer and your mom are both here. Iโll get Jonathan to leave. You wonโt have to feel awkward.โ
โItโs not that, Mr. Lynn. Iโm really busy. I canโt make it. Iโll come to see you another day,โ Teresa said.
โHumph.โ Hayden didnโt believe her. โDonโt lie to me. I know youโre just avoiding the awkwardness.โ
While calling Teresa, Hayden patted Jonathanโs shoulder. โYou better leave. Otherwise, Teresa will feel awkward when she comes.โ
Jonathan was taken aback.
Teresa furrowed her brow. โMr. Lynn, really, itโs not necessaryโโ
Hayden cut Teresa off. โHeโs already gone. He said he had something urgent at the company. You should come. Itโs been so long since I last saw you!โ
Teresa sighed in frustration. โMr. Lynn, youโre putting me in a tough spot. I really canโt come.โ
After all, even if Jonathan left, Irene would still be there.
She said, โIโll come to see you another day when Iโm free. Please donโt wait for me. Enjoy your meal. And let Jonathan come back. I didnโt mean to send him away. This is the Lynn familyโs celebration. He should be here.โ
Hayden said helplessly, โNoโno. It would be great if you came today. Just wait.โ
From the other end of the line came a burst of noisy chatter, and then the call was disconnected.
After hanging up, Teresa was somewhat dazed, unsure of what she was supposed to be waiting for.
โMommy,โ Michael asked her, โWhatโs wrong? Who called?โ
โNobody important. Just someone inviting me to a party,โ she said.
โWow, a party. I saw videos of people at parties looking so happy. I want to go too.โ Michael tugged at Teresaโs hand. โLetโs go together. Then you wonโt have to cook dinner.โ
Teresa was taken aback.
Before long, her phone rang again. Teresa declined the call. โI have already said I wouldnโt go. Whyโs Irene still calling?โ she wondered.
However, Irene called several more times. Seeing Michael waiting in the room for the meal to start, Teresa went to her room to answer the call.
Irene cleared her throat. โItโs me.โ
โWhat do you want?โ said Teresa.
โWe are at Horizonlead Hotel. Get here quickly. Everyone from the Lynn family is waiting for you. Hayden said he wonโt eat if you donโt come. Heโs throwing a tantrum,โ Irene sounded gloomy.
โIโm not coming.โ Teresa suddenly felt a sense of relief. โI wonโt attend any of the Lynn familyโs events.โ
Irene took a deep breath. โThis time, you should come. Itโs Jenniferโs engagement. You should be here. Itโs so rude to be absent. You are her sister.โ
โIt doesnโt matter. Byeโโ Teresa didnโt care.
โWait.โ Irene gritted her teeth. โYou have to come. Hayden insisted that I call you personally, or heโll blame me.โ
โWhatever. Iโm not part of the Lynn family anymore. Why should I care about you, Irene?โ Teresa said.
Irene was stunned for a moment. Although she was extremely reluctant and unwilling, she couldnโt forget Haydenโs domineering and aggressive demeanor. Irene had no choice but to endure it. โPlease. Weโre all waiting for you.โ
Teresa frowned. โHas Cheryl gone already?โ she wondered.
Irene continued, โTeresa, Iโm begging you. What more do you want? This is about Jennifer and Donald. Come here, okay?โ
โWhy should I risk saying something wrong and getting snapped at by you? Itโs not worth it,โ Teresa said.
โYouโโ Irene could clearly hear the sarcasm in Teresaโs voice.
โI canโt control what I say today, but for the sake of the Lynn family and Haydenโs face, you should show up, right? Just come, okay? Thatโs it,โ she sighed.
Teresa was silent for a few seconds. โSince youโre begging me like this, you have to come downstairs and greet me personally when I arrive at the restaurant. Iโll think about it and come over.โ
โYouโโ Ireneโs nails were digging into her palm, cursing Teresa a hundred times in her mind. โFine, today youโre the guest. Whatever. Call me when you get here.โ
Teresa quickly tidied up and was about to leave when Michael asked, โMommy, youโre going to the party. Take me with you.โ
Teresa said, โNo, baby, you canโt go.โ
Michael clung tightly to Teresaโs leg. โBad mommy. You never bring me to a party.โ
