Chapter 366

Once Donald and Jennifer were back on the road, Donald suddenly spoke. โ€œYou mentioned an exโ€™s kid earlier. That child should be about three now, right? Jonathan and Teresa have been divorced for over three years.โ€

Jenniferโ€™s fingers tightened, and she glared at Donald. โ€œMy sisterโ€™s just like me. Weโ€™d never have a kid with an ex. Stop letting your imagination run wild.โ€

At a red light, Donald glanced at her. โ€œEx? Didnโ€™t you say I was your first love? Are you hiding some ex from me?โ€

Jennifer remained calm. โ€œIt was just an example. Donโ€™t make up stories.โ€

She quickly changed the subject. โ€œOh, by the way, I called my college friend from Shaville. Heโ€™s coming to Nareigh for my engagement party.โ€

โ€œA guy?โ€ Donald asked.

โ€œYeah,โ€ Jennifer replied.

โ€œI remember you mentioning him before. Whatโ€™s his name again?โ€ Donald asked, trying to recall.

If it hadnโ€™t been for Donaldโ€™s car accident, Jennifer probably would have already moved to Shaville to work with that friend.

โ€œSanford,โ€ Jennifer replied.

Donald grinned, a bit jealous. โ€œIs he good-looking? More handsome than me? Let me see a photo. I havenโ€™t met him yet.โ€

Jennifer pulled up a recent photo from Sanfordโ€™s Facebook and showed Donald her phone. Donald only meant to take a quick look, but then he frowned. โ€œThis guy kind of looks like my dad.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ Jennifer leaned in for a closer look. Sheโ€™d only met Donaldโ€™s dad a few times, but now that she paid attention, there was a resemblance.

Donald joked, โ€œI trust my dad. Heโ€™s not that kind of guy. No way Sanfordโ€™s his secret son or anything.โ€

Jennifer laughed. โ€œThe worldโ€™s full of surprises.โ€

โ€œSeriously,โ€ Donald said with a chuckle. โ€œThe more I look, the more that little kid looks like Jonathan.โ€

Jennifer nudged his shoulder. โ€œAlright, thatโ€™s enough. Now youโ€™re just being ridiculous.โ€

Donald shrugged. โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m just overthinking it.โ€

The next day, Teresa was at home when she received a call from Evelyn. Evelyn told her that she and Isabel had just arrived in Nareigh.

โ€œWhat?โ€ exclaimed Teresa.

โ€œIt was your sisterโ€™s boyfriend. He had Jonathan give him my address in Fernlandia. Thatโ€™s when I found out heโ€™s Jonathanโ€™s cousin; your sisterโ€™s marrying him,โ€ Evelyn said.

โ€œOh,โ€ Teresa replied icily. Evelyn frowned, clearly annoyed by her attitude. She said, โ€œItโ€™s one thing if your sister complains about me. I know I owe her from when she was little. But you? I have no idea what youโ€™re thinking, running off to Fernlandia without a word. Now your sisterโ€™s getting married, and all this time you never even told me her fiancรฉ is Jonathanโ€™s cousin. By the way, whatโ€™s his mom like? Sheโ€™s not as bad as your ex-mother-in-law, is she?โ€

โ€œAsk her yourself. I donโ€™t want anything to do with you or Jennifer anymore. As long as youโ€™re happy, thatโ€™s all that matters.โ€ With that, Teresa hung up.

Back when Teresa married Jonathan, Evelyn couldnโ€™t have cared less. She never even bothered to ask what her in-laws were like or if theyโ€™d get along. But now, for Jenniferโ€™s engagementโ€”just the engagement, not even the weddingโ€”Evelyn rushed back. Teresa didnโ€™t want to say anything more, but her eyes still stung with tears.

In the early evening, Evelyn stood outside Rosary Estates, holding Isabel in her arms, suitcase by her side, downstairs from Teresaโ€™s apartment complex. Evelyn couldnโ€™t remember which unit Teresa lived in, and no matter how many times she called, Teresa wouldnโ€™t answer. Alone, dragging her suitcase and carrying a child, she stood in the chilly courtyard, dressed far too lightly for the weather.

It was Michael who spotted them first, leaning over the balcony. โ€œMom, Grandma and Aunt Isabel are downstairs! Theyโ€™re back! Come look!โ€

Teresaโ€™s heart sank at the sight of Evelyn and Isabel waiting downstairs with all their things. Annoyed, she hurried Michael back to his room. โ€œDonโ€™t worry about them.โ€

Downstairs, the neighbors had already started whispering. โ€œWhoโ€™s that woman standing there with a kid?โ€ โ€œTsk, her kids are really heartless. Just leaving her out here?โ€ โ€œItโ€™s freezing tonight. Sheโ€™s going to catch a cold if she stays out much longer.โ€ โ€œYeah, and sheโ€™s got a child with her. They should get inside before the kid gets sick.โ€

Isabelโ€™s nose was already running. Teresa couldnโ€™t hold back anymore. She grabbed a jacket and stomped downstairs.

Teresa tossed the jacket at Evelyn, barely looking at her. โ€œPut this on Isabel.โ€

Evelyn finally put her phone away, freeing up a hand to poke Teresaโ€™s forehead. โ€œYou little brat, I called you so many times and you didnโ€™t answer.โ€

โ€œWhy should I? Go find Hannah. Sheโ€™s the one getting married, not me. Why are you here looking for me?โ€ Teresa shot back.

โ€œI canโ€™t get in touch with your sister at all. As soon as I heard she was marrying Jonathanโ€™s cousin, I rushed back,โ€ Evelyn said.

โ€œOh, so you only care about her? What about me? Have you ever asked how Iโ€™m doing? Sheโ€™s your daughter, but Iโ€™m not?โ€ Teresa couldnโ€™t hold back her resentment.

Evelyn just waved her off. โ€œArenโ€™t you doing fine here in Nareigh? You even look like youโ€™ve put on some weight.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve only been back in Nareigh a few days. I left Fernlandia months ago and have been drifting around ever since,โ€ Teresa replied.

โ€œSo where did you go? Anyway, let us in. Itโ€™s freezing out here. We can talk inside,โ€ Evelyn pleaded.

But Teresaโ€™s tone was icy. She was determined to be as distant as Hannah. โ€œIโ€™ll book a hotel room for you two. Youโ€™re not staying here.โ€

Evelyn blurted, โ€œWhat? Isnโ€™t there space here at Rosary Estates? Youโ€”โ€

โ€œThis is my home. Mine and Michaelโ€™s. I donโ€™t want anyone else here,โ€ interrupted Teresa.

That stung. Evelynโ€™s face fell. โ€œFine, itโ€™s not like I donโ€™t have anywhere else to go. With that attitude, no wonder you ended up divorced. I really give up on you.โ€

With that, Evelyn grabbed her suitcase and walked off with Isabel.

Teresa took a deep breath. In the past, she would have stopped her mother. She did feel bad, but this time, she couldnโ€™t bring herself to do it.

When they got home, Michael, who had seen what happened downstairs, asked, โ€œMom, where did Grandma and Aunt Isabel go?โ€

Teresa explained, โ€œTheyโ€™re staying at a hotel tonight. Theyโ€™re not staying with us. There just isnโ€™t enough space for four people here.โ€

Michael looked up at her. โ€œBut Mom, are hotels even open this late?โ€

โ€œOf course. Nareigh has plenty of hotels, so thereโ€™s nothing to worry about. Come on, letโ€™s get ready for bed. This is our home, remember?โ€ said Teresa.

Teresa gently nudged the little guy into his room, and only then did he nod. Once he was asleep, Teresa pulled out her phone, unblocked Jennifer on WhatsApp, and sent her a message: [Evelyn is back for your wedding. She and Isabel are staying at a hotel. If you want to see her, youโ€™ll have to reach out yourself.]

After sending the message, Teresa didnโ€™t give it another thought. She pulled the covers over herself and went to sleep.
