Chapter 366
Once Donald and Jennifer were back on the road, Donald suddenly spoke. โYou mentioned an exโs kid earlier. That child should be about three now, right? Jonathan and Teresa have been divorced for over three years.โ
Jenniferโs fingers tightened, and she glared at Donald. โMy sisterโs just like me. Weโd never have a kid with an ex. Stop letting your imagination run wild.โ
At a red light, Donald glanced at her. โEx? Didnโt you say I was your first love? Are you hiding some ex from me?โ
Jennifer remained calm. โIt was just an example. Donโt make up stories.โ
She quickly changed the subject. โOh, by the way, I called my college friend from Shaville. Heโs coming to Nareigh for my engagement party.โ
โA guy?โ Donald asked.
โYeah,โ Jennifer replied.
โI remember you mentioning him before. Whatโs his name again?โ Donald asked, trying to recall.
If it hadnโt been for Donaldโs car accident, Jennifer probably would have already moved to Shaville to work with that friend.
โSanford,โ Jennifer replied.
Donald grinned, a bit jealous. โIs he good-looking? More handsome than me? Let me see a photo. I havenโt met him yet.โ
Jennifer pulled up a recent photo from Sanfordโs Facebook and showed Donald her phone. Donald only meant to take a quick look, but then he frowned. โThis guy kind of looks like my dad.โ
โReally?โ Jennifer leaned in for a closer look. Sheโd only met Donaldโs dad a few times, but now that she paid attention, there was a resemblance.
Donald joked, โI trust my dad. Heโs not that kind of guy. No way Sanfordโs his secret son or anything.โ
Jennifer laughed. โThe worldโs full of surprises.โ
โSeriously,โ Donald said with a chuckle. โThe more I look, the more that little kid looks like Jonathan.โ
Jennifer nudged his shoulder. โAlright, thatโs enough. Now youโre just being ridiculous.โ
Donald shrugged. โMaybe Iโm just overthinking it.โ
The next day, Teresa was at home when she received a call from Evelyn. Evelyn told her that she and Isabel had just arrived in Nareigh.
โWhat?โ exclaimed Teresa.
โIt was your sisterโs boyfriend. He had Jonathan give him my address in Fernlandia. Thatโs when I found out heโs Jonathanโs cousin; your sisterโs marrying him,โ Evelyn said.
โOh,โ Teresa replied icily. Evelyn frowned, clearly annoyed by her attitude. She said, โItโs one thing if your sister complains about me. I know I owe her from when she was little. But you? I have no idea what youโre thinking, running off to Fernlandia without a word. Now your sisterโs getting married, and all this time you never even told me her fiancรฉ is Jonathanโs cousin. By the way, whatโs his mom like? Sheโs not as bad as your ex-mother-in-law, is she?โ
โAsk her yourself. I donโt want anything to do with you or Jennifer anymore. As long as youโre happy, thatโs all that matters.โ With that, Teresa hung up.
Back when Teresa married Jonathan, Evelyn couldnโt have cared less. She never even bothered to ask what her in-laws were like or if theyโd get along. But now, for Jenniferโs engagementโjust the engagement, not even the weddingโEvelyn rushed back. Teresa didnโt want to say anything more, but her eyes still stung with tears.
In the early evening, Evelyn stood outside Rosary Estates, holding Isabel in her arms, suitcase by her side, downstairs from Teresaโs apartment complex. Evelyn couldnโt remember which unit Teresa lived in, and no matter how many times she called, Teresa wouldnโt answer. Alone, dragging her suitcase and carrying a child, she stood in the chilly courtyard, dressed far too lightly for the weather.
It was Michael who spotted them first, leaning over the balcony. โMom, Grandma and Aunt Isabel are downstairs! Theyโre back! Come look!โ
Teresaโs heart sank at the sight of Evelyn and Isabel waiting downstairs with all their things. Annoyed, she hurried Michael back to his room. โDonโt worry about them.โ
Downstairs, the neighbors had already started whispering. โWhoโs that woman standing there with a kid?โ โTsk, her kids are really heartless. Just leaving her out here?โ โItโs freezing tonight. Sheโs going to catch a cold if she stays out much longer.โ โYeah, and sheโs got a child with her. They should get inside before the kid gets sick.โ
Isabelโs nose was already running. Teresa couldnโt hold back anymore. She grabbed a jacket and stomped downstairs.
Teresa tossed the jacket at Evelyn, barely looking at her. โPut this on Isabel.โ
Evelyn finally put her phone away, freeing up a hand to poke Teresaโs forehead. โYou little brat, I called you so many times and you didnโt answer.โ
โWhy should I? Go find Hannah. Sheโs the one getting married, not me. Why are you here looking for me?โ Teresa shot back.
โI canโt get in touch with your sister at all. As soon as I heard she was marrying Jonathanโs cousin, I rushed back,โ Evelyn said.
โOh, so you only care about her? What about me? Have you ever asked how Iโm doing? Sheโs your daughter, but Iโm not?โ Teresa couldnโt hold back her resentment.
Evelyn just waved her off. โArenโt you doing fine here in Nareigh? You even look like youโve put on some weight.โ
โIโve only been back in Nareigh a few days. I left Fernlandia months ago and have been drifting around ever since,โ Teresa replied.
โSo where did you go? Anyway, let us in. Itโs freezing out here. We can talk inside,โ Evelyn pleaded.
But Teresaโs tone was icy. She was determined to be as distant as Hannah. โIโll book a hotel room for you two. Youโre not staying here.โ
Evelyn blurted, โWhat? Isnโt there space here at Rosary Estates? Youโโ
โThis is my home. Mine and Michaelโs. I donโt want anyone else here,โ interrupted Teresa.
That stung. Evelynโs face fell. โFine, itโs not like I donโt have anywhere else to go. With that attitude, no wonder you ended up divorced. I really give up on you.โ
With that, Evelyn grabbed her suitcase and walked off with Isabel.
Teresa took a deep breath. In the past, she would have stopped her mother. She did feel bad, but this time, she couldnโt bring herself to do it.
When they got home, Michael, who had seen what happened downstairs, asked, โMom, where did Grandma and Aunt Isabel go?โ
Teresa explained, โTheyโre staying at a hotel tonight. Theyโre not staying with us. There just isnโt enough space for four people here.โ
Michael looked up at her. โBut Mom, are hotels even open this late?โ
โOf course. Nareigh has plenty of hotels, so thereโs nothing to worry about. Come on, letโs get ready for bed. This is our home, remember?โ said Teresa.
Teresa gently nudged the little guy into his room, and only then did he nod. Once he was asleep, Teresa pulled out her phone, unblocked Jennifer on WhatsApp, and sent her a message: [Evelyn is back for your wedding. She and Isabel are staying at a hotel. If you want to see her, youโll have to reach out yourself.]
After sending the message, Teresa didnโt give it another thought. She pulled the covers over herself and went to sleep.
