Chapter 364
โDonโt worry about her,โ Teresa said, hugging Michael. โMany people love my little muffin, and thatโs all that matters.โ
After cheering him up, Teresa brought Michael to the office. Parking in the B2 underground lot, she took the elevator directly to her office and told Michael to be good and wait. She had a meeting.
โMommy, am I still going to preschool?โ Michael wondered.
โOf course, you are,โ Teresa said. โIโll consider which preschool is best. Letโs wait until after your third birthday; you can start again in the fall, okay?โ In Everport, Michael had actually begun preschool before turning three, as they made an exception for him.
Michael let Teresa squish his cheeks, then put his hands on his hips and huffed, โYou have to buy me a cake for my birthday this time! I want chocolate.โ
โAlright,โ Teresa laughed.
She left for her meeting. Shortly after, the receptionist announced, โMs. Johnston, Jennifer is here to see you.โ
Teresaโs face darkened. โIโm not seeing her. Tell her to leave.โ
The receptionist added, โShe said she wants to talk about her marriage.โ
Teresa paused. โLet her wait in the second-floor lounge.โ
Jennifer arrived, and Teresa immediately stated, โIf youโve got something to say, just say it. Are we sticking to our deal or not?โ
Jennifer cut to the chase. โI heard from Donaldโs mother that she called you. She even asked if youโre playing stepmom now. Iโm guessing she heard Mikeโs voice in the background.โ
Teresa began to lose her temper. โYeah, Mike called me โMom,โ and Mrs. Lynn overheard.โ
Jennifer nodded. โI told her you donโt have any children and are just looking after a friendโs child. Relax. Iโve got you covered.โ
Teresa smirked. โIndeed. With a sister like this, whatโs there to fear?โ she thought.
Jennifer changed the subject. โIโm getting engaged.โ
Teresa nodded. โYes, Mrs. Lynn mentioned it. She hopes Iโll attend your engagement party and have a meal with both families.โ
Jennifer sighed, leaning back. โHonestly, itโs mostly Haydenโs idea. He wants you there. Otherwise, I wouldnโt care if you came or not.โ
Teresaโs expression was blank. โIโm not going. Iโve already said I donโt attend these things.โ
Jennifer saw the sarcasm. โAre you mad I didnโt tell you about the engagement? I figured thereโs no point. If we end up clashing again, itโs not worth it.โ
โYeah, if I ruin your engagement party, Iโll be the villain for ages. Better I stay away,โ Teresa sneered.
Jennifer shook her head. โGirl, ruining my engagement isnโt the main thing. Iโm worried Irene might give you a hard time.โ
Teresa didnโt respond; sheโd already declined. If a family member was required, Evelyn could go.
Jennifer took a deep breath. โYou call her. Ever since you left Fernlandia, Iโve blocked her. I have no interest in keeping in touch.โ
โItโs your engagementโyou want me to call your mother?โ Teresa asked.
โSheโs your mother too, isnโt she?โ Jennifer retorted.
โI havenโt spoken to her since I left Fernlandia either. Itโs your wedding, not mine. You tell her yourself. Donโt come to me. Iโm busy.โ Teresa stood, furious, ready to leave.
Jennifer called after her, handing Teresa a key. Teresa looked at it, confused.
Jennifer explained, โThis is a spare key to the apartment I bought in Nareigh, Newuze Garden, on Haven Road. If youโre too busy to look after Mike, you can bring him to my place. Iโll help take care of him.โ
โNo need,โ Teresa refused immediately. Sheโd already told Jennifer not to bother her. โWhat is she trying to do now?โ Teresa wondered.
Jennifer added, โOr you can just live there yourself if you want. I donโt want to interfere. After I get married, I wonโt be living there anyway. Iโll move in with Donald, into the place his family prepared for us. Honestly, I got that apartment for you.โ
โFor me?โ Teresa stared at Jennifer. โIs that really what you want? You keep saying itโs for me, for your little sister, but honestly, itโs just for yourself. You canโt let go of Donald, and you feel guilty for pushing me away. Thatโs why you bought that apartmentโto make yourself feel better, right?โ
โTeresa, youโโ Jennifer tried to argue.
โLet me finish,โ Teresa interrupted. โI do wish you happiness, you and the man you love. If this is what you wantโliving in Nareigh, being a wife and mother, always on edgeโthen go ahead and live that way. If youโd gone to Shaville initially, maybe we wouldnโt have ended up like this as sisters. Donโt you think?โ
Jennifer was about to speak but couldnโt. Her eyes reddened.
She took a deep breath. โYouโre right. If it werenโt for Donald, Iโd probably be working in Shaville now. I wouldnโt have bought that apartment, and things wouldnโt be like this between us. You wouldnโt misunderstand me, or even hate meโฆ Teresa, what should I do?โ
