Chapter 361
Donald, ever sharp-eyed, immediately noticed the red mark on Jenniferโs face. Jennifer said lightly, โA mom brought her kid to see the doctor, and the kid accidentally scratched my face.โ
โLet me help you take care of that scratch first,โ Donald offered.
โNo need. It doesnโt even hurt. Your parents are waiting,โ Jennifer insisted. She firmly hooked her arm through his and told him to deal with it after dinner.
They had barely sat down when Jonathan walked in. Hayden, sitting at the head of the table, shot Jonathan a glare. โHonestly, I donโt even want to see you. No wife, no kids, always out and about. How long has it been since you came home?โ
Irene quickly chimed in, โJonathanโs busy with work. Thatโs better than just loafing around, right?โ
While Irene was talking, Jonathan had already walked over to Hayden, put a hand on his shoulder, and said heโd brought some good wine to help him cool off. Hayden pushed him away. โGo on, get out of here. I donโt want you leaning on me. Look at Donaldโheโs about to get married. And you? Youโve got nothing. Youโre my eldest grandson, for heavenโs sake.โ
Jonathan glanced over at Donald and Jennifer. After he sat down, he asked Donald, โSo, youโre getting married?โ
โYeah. Weโre planning to get engaged next month,โ Donald replied.
Jonathan nodded. โOh really? Thatโs great.โ Jonathan had no idea about the engagement. He wasnโt sure if Teresa knew either. If the engagement was set for next month, that was coming up fast.
Donald said, โJonathan, stay in Nareigh a few more days. You have to be here when Jennifer and I get engaged.โ
โAlright,โ Jonathan replied, pouring himself a drink and clinking glasses with Donald.
Irene tugged on Jonathanโs sleeve, signaling for him to take it easy and not drink too much.
Hayden frowned. โWeโre all family here. Let him drink if he wants. Whatโs there to worry about?โ
Irene pressed her lips together. It wasnโt just about the drinkingโshe wanted to talk to Jonathan later, and she didnโt want him drinking on an empty stomach. She was also worried about his stomach acting up.
Werner raised his glass to Jonathan and said, โDonald just bought an Audi A7. You saw it, right? I thought heโd go for the A8. Itโs not like he canโt afford it.โ
Jonathan glanced over at Donald. The truth was that Donald had borrowed the money for the car from him, but he didnโt say anything.
โThe A7โs great. Young people like something stylish. Iโm getting old. Driving an A8 would just make me look even older,โ Jonathan said.
Werner chuckled. โCome on, youโre only four years older than Donald. Thirty isnโt oldโitโs the best time of your life! Next time, bring your girlfriend home, alright? Stop dragging your feet. Itโs time to move on.โ
โYouโre right. Time to move on,โ Jonathan said, clinking glasses with Werner and taking a drink.
On the other side, Donald sat in silence, poured himself another drink, and downed it, lost in thought.
As the family dinner wrapped up, Werner helped Hayden up, yet Hayden turned to Jennifer. He said, โHannah, next time, bring Teresa over for dinner, will you? Just tell her I miss her. Even if sheโs not my granddaughter-in-law anymore, I want to see her.โ
โYou and Donald are getting married soon, so weโre all family now. Thereโs nothing to be embarrassed about.โ
Irene let out a quiet, sarcastic laugh. If Hayden and Jonathan werenโt right there, she definitely would have said something. โBring Teresa? As if things werenโt messy enough already,โ she thought.
After Hayden left, Jonathan turned to Irene, who was still grumbling to herself. โLetโs go,โ he said.
Once they got in the car, Irene finally asked, โYouโre not drunk, are you? I need to talk to you about something.โ
