Chapter 349
After Teresa hung up, Jonathan texted her.
Jonathan: [You never let me finish what I want to say.] Teresa: [What did you want to say? Didn't I just say that weโll talk when we meet?] Jonathan: [Iโm in a meeting. Weโll talk later.] Teresa: [What time is โlaterโ?] Jonathan: [Not sure.]
When Teresa saw the last two words, she didnโt reply. Since he didnโt know, she would just wait.
Jennifer suddenly showed up at her place, along with Donald. Teresa sneered, โNow that you know where I live, you just come over anytime you want, huh? Iโm an adult. Iโm not going to starve to death.โ
Donald tried to play peacemaker. โJennifer is just worried about you. Sheโs afraid youโre not eating well.โ
Jennifer chimed in, โHonestly, since weโre in Everport and I came to see you, you should be the one treating us. Youโre always so clueless.โ
โFridgeโs empty. Bye,โ Teresa said, cutting them off.
Donald said, โHow about I treat you both? Youโre sisters, reunited in Everport. Weโre all family here, arenโt we? It just feels right to have a meal together before we leave.โ
Theyโd rushed over, and now they were about to rush off againโwithout even sharing a meal? That didnโt seem right. If Teresa refused, Jennifer would probably stand there all day, and Donald would keep accompanying her.
Teresa finally headed downstairs. Donald drove while Teresa and Jennifer sat in the back.
Trying to break the ice, Jennifer grabbed Teresaโs hand. โHonestly, youโre going to be the death of me.โ
Teresa pulled her hand away and stared out the window, expressionlessly.
Donald said, โTeresa, Jennifer really worries about you. Sheโs always telling me sheโs afraid youโre not eating or sleeping well.โ Jennifer looked at Teresa with expectant eyes. Donald paused. He added, โTeresa, Jennifer really does care about you.โ
Teresa felt a strange mix of emotions. She frowned, saying nothing. Donald hesitated. โTeresa?โ
โJust stop talking, Donald,โ Jennifer cut in.
Teresa sighed, โI donโt need you to tell me if she cares about me.โ
Jennifer snapped, โHow can you speak to him like that? Thatโs so rude.โ
Teresa shrugged. โThatโs just how I talk. You know me.โ
They got a window seat at an Everport barbecue restaurant. Donald, the gentleman, tied a little apron around Jennifer, and she helped him put his on, too.
โLet Teresa take a look firstโsee what she wants to eat,โ Donald said, sliding the menu over to her.
โWhatever. You two decide,โ Teresa replied, remaining terse.
Donald stopped asking Teresa and turned to Jennifer for her opinion, occasionally looking at her tenderly. Jennifer clearly enjoyed the attention, while Teresa felt awkward, witnessing their display of affection throughout the meal.
She couldnโt help but wonderโwhen she and Jonathan were still married, did people around them feel so awkward, too? The couple showing off their affection might feel great, but for the person stuck watching, it was just uncomfortable. At least for Teresa, watching Jennifer and Donald act all sweet was repulsiveโshe didnโt know why.
During the meal, Teresa ate silently, ignoring them. Only after finishing did she remember something. She checked her phone, which was on silent mode, and saw Jonathan had called. She sent him a message: [Iโm having dinner with Jennifer and Donald.]
Jonathan: [I just finished my work; havenโt eaten yet.] Teresa: [You really donโt need to come here.]
Teresa thought, If you show up, youโll just end up watching those two being all lovey-dovey. Why put yourself through that?
Jonathan: [Okay.] Teresa: [Iโm heading back now.]
Teresa was in a rush to leave, and since Donald and Jennifer had almost finished eating, too, the two offered to take Teresa home.
Jennifer said, โWhy donโt you just stay with me tonight? We can go to the airport together tomorrow.โ
โNo, thanks. I donโt want to stay with you two. Itโs too annoying,โ Teresa shot back.
Teresa had already gotten out of the car. She wasnโt like Jennifer, who lacked a sense of boundaries.
Jennifer called after her, โYou forgot your bag.โ
โOh.โ Teresa turned back to grab her bag. Seeing Teresaโs consistently poor attitude towards Jennifer, Donald was quite angry. After all, Jennifer had been so worried about Teresa. However, Teresa didnโt seem to appreciate it at all. Sheโd been giving Jennifer the cold shoulder during the whole dinner.
As soon as he got out of the car, Donald couldnโt help but say, โTeresa Johnston, do you have to be like that? Youโre breaking Jenniferโs heart.โ
โYou donโt get to say that to her.โ A cold, annoyed voice suddenly came from behind. Jonathan had already crossed the street and was walking over, tall and composed, his eyes fixed on Donald as he frowned. โDonโt be so rude to her.โ
Before Donald could say anything, Jennifer spoke up, โHeโs my boyfriend. He just said that for my sake.โ
Jonathan didnโt even look at Jennifer, still staring at Donald. โApologize to her.โ
Teresa said, โLet it go. Itโs nothing.โ
โApologize, now,โ Jonathan insisted stubbornly.
Donald nodded. โAlright. I was wrong. Sorry, Teresa.โ
โLetโs go.โ Jonathan wrapped his arm around Teresaโs waist and, without another word, led her toward her apartment.
โWhy did you apologize? You didnโt say anything wrong,โ Jennifer said, taking a deep breath.
But this time, Donald didnโt take Jenniferโs side. โI crossed the line. Sheโs Jonathanโs woman. I shouldnโt have said that to her.โ
This was the first time Donald had refused to listen to Jennifer. Normally, he always backed her up, knowing how stubborn she was.
Jennifer got even more upset. โYouโre supposed to be on my side.โ
โAlright, alright, letโs just go,โ Donald said, trying to change the subject.
Jennifer yanked her hand out of Donaldโs and got into the car angrily.
Donald got in too and tried to reason with Jennifer. โOf course Iโm on your side, but I have to be more polite to her, okay? After all, she was Jonathanโs wife.โ
โYouโโ Jennifer started.
โThis time, just do as I say,โ Donald said.
