Chapter 310

This must be how all displaced souls feel. For the first time, the loneliness of displacement truly struck Teresa.

โ€œWe all have our battles,โ€ Rebecca sighed. โ€œI grew up without my parentsโ€”put myself through school, scraped by. Now Iโ€™ve got stability, but life never stops testing you.โ€ Being an adult meant endless compromises.

Teresa said, โ€œI really want a drink, Rebecca. Do you get how I feel?โ€

โ€œNot a chance,โ€ Rebecca said firmly. โ€œI get it, but no drinking until that babyโ€™s born.โ€

Carrying a child changed everything. Every choice now carried double the weight. Teresa knew that. She cradled her belly. โ€œBe kind to Mom, little one.โ€

โ€œIs your firstborn a boy or a girl?โ€ Rebecca asked.

โ€œA boy,โ€ Teresa replied. โ€œThis time, Iโ€™m hoping for a girl.โ€

โ€œClassic,โ€ Rebecca chuckled. โ€œThe grass is always greener.โ€

โ€œGirls are easier, arenโ€™t they?โ€

โ€œDepends on the kid,โ€ Rebecca said. โ€œNo guarantees.โ€

โ€œTrue enough,โ€ Teresa agreed. Then she asked about the babyโ€™s gender.

โ€œNot twins, but too early to tell. Another month, maybe.โ€ She paused. โ€œAre you considering an abortion?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Teresa said sharply. โ€œIโ€™m just curious. This baby is mine. Boy or girlโ€”it doesnโ€™t matter.โ€

โ€œThen be patient,โ€ Rebecca said. โ€œThe surprise will come.โ€

Teresa smiled. The way Teresa dipped her chin when smiling made Rebecca think of Jennifer. She shared that same gesture. Yet, where Jenniferโ€™s gaze carried a sharp elegance at the corners, Teresaโ€™s eyes softened into crescent moonsโ€”their features holding no true mirror image.

After some idle chat, Teresa prepared to leave. Before leaving, she paused. โ€œWould light exercise be alright?โ€ She explained, โ€œMy sonโ€™s school is having its annual family sports day.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™d better not run or jump. Ask a friend to go to the sports day for you,โ€ Rebecca advised.

โ€œAlright, I get it,โ€ Teresa replied.

Rebecca, a few years older, had taken to treating Teresa like a younger sister. โ€œYouโ€™re so pretty. Donโ€™t stay single. Go find yourself a new guy, you totally could.โ€

Teresa shook her head. One marriage was more than enough.

Rebecca sighed, sliding a fruit basket toward her. โ€œTake these for your son. I donโ€™t really eat fruit. If you need help, just come find me. Iโ€™m at the clinic on Mondays and Wednesdays.โ€

โ€œThanks,โ€ Teresa said and left.

When Teresa returned home, it was already evening. She went to the kitchen and began to prepare dinner. Michael fiddled with her phone and ran up to her. โ€œMom, you are chatting with Jonathan!โ€

Teresa snatched her phone back, scrolling through the messages. Relief washed over herโ€”no strange texts from her son. She quickly changed the passcode.

She fixed him with a stern look. โ€œGo play with your tablet. Donโ€™t sneak my phone again, or Iโ€™ll really get mad.โ€

Michael pouted. โ€œI just wanted to check if Jonathan texted you. Mom, whyโ€™s Jonathanโ€™s contact name so weird? What does it mean?โ€

Teresa had changed Jonathanโ€™s contact name to โ€œSoused Doggy.โ€ That was because he was always drinking and blacking out.

Michael pointed at the name. โ€œMom, whatโ€™s a โ€˜Soused Doggyโ€™?โ€

โ€œUhโ€ฆ Itโ€™s โ€˜Snazzy Doggyโ€™,โ€ Teresa blurted. โ€œIt means heโ€™sโ€ฆ good-looking!โ€

Michael crossed his arms and rolled his eyes. โ€œHmph, donโ€™t try to fool me. I know the word โ€˜snazzy.โ€™ Thatโ€™s not it.โ€ He peered closer. โ€œIs that โ€˜Sillyโ€™? Whyโ€™d you call him โ€˜Silly Doggyโ€™?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not โ€˜Silly Doggyโ€™!โ€ Teresa groaned. โ€œFine, Iโ€™ll change it. Okay?โ€

Michael tapped his chin thoughtfully. โ€œHow aboutโ€ฆ โ€˜Good Doggyโ€™?โ€

โ€œGood Doggy it is.โ€ Teresa typed the new name with exaggerated flair.

She scrolled through their short chat history and remembered sheโ€™d once said, โ€œWhoever initiates their conversation becomes the dog.โ€ After that, they hadnโ€™t spoken again. She thought he had probably come back to Nareigh.

โ€œMom,โ€ Michael tugged her sleeve. โ€œCan I message Jonathan and ask for another autograph? Heidi tore up the last one.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s probably asleep by now,โ€ Teresa said, glancing at the time on her phone. โ€œDonโ€™t worry, Iโ€™ll ask him tomorrow.โ€

With Childrenโ€™s Day around the corner, Teresa headed to the mall after work to buy a gift for Michael. She also bought two athletic shirts.

Ivy, tagging along, raised an eyebrow as she saw Teresa buy a kidโ€™s T-shirt. โ€œWhoโ€™s the kidโ€™s T-shirt for?โ€ she asked.

โ€œOh, my neighbor asked me to grab it for her kid,โ€ Teresa answered.

Ivy smirked and leaned in. โ€œDonโ€™t tell me youโ€™re planning to wear one as a crop top.โ€

Teresa rolled her eyes. โ€œTheyโ€™re childrenโ€™s sizes. Whatโ€™s wrong with you?โ€

โ€œWith your figure, you could totally rock it as a tight top.โ€ Ivy waved her hands at Teresaโ€™s chest. โ€œFlaunt what youโ€™ve got. If I had your figure, Iโ€™d be posting selfies every hour on Facebook. But you? Never see you update anything.โ€

Teresa shrugged. She actually used to love posting updates, but ever since Truman tracked her Facebook posts and started stalking her, she lost all interest in sharing her life online.

At that very moment, on the penthouse floor of the building, Jonathan was in the midst of an interview with a financial magazine. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows stretched the breathtaking panorama of Everport.

The interview centered on youth entrepreneurshipโ€”a topic Jonathan spoke on with particular conviction, given that he himself was only thirty years old, at the peak of his prime.

Jonathan said, โ€œEvery young person whoโ€™s brave enough to start a business deserves applause and recognition, no matter how things turn out.โ€

โ€œThen Mr. Lynn, whatโ€™s your entrepreneurial success formula?โ€ asked the host.

โ€œYour own abilities, opportunities, and reliable alliances as well,โ€ Jonathan answered.

โ€œAh, the trifectaโ€”competence, catalyst, and collaboration,โ€ the host smiled approvingly.

Jonathan nodded. He was polite, yet he still exuded a powerful aura.

โ€œMr. Lynn, you once said that your drive for success was to earn someoneโ€™s approval. Have you gotten that personโ€™s recognition now?โ€

A familiar figure flashed through Jonathanโ€™s mind. His eyes softened, and a faint smile appeared on his lips. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œBut from the look on your face, it seems like youโ€™re still not completely satisfiedโ€”maybe even a little disappointed. Why is that?โ€

โ€œWhen you gain something, youโ€™re bound to lose something else,โ€ Jonathan murmured.
