Chapter 310
This must be how all displaced souls feel. For the first time, the loneliness of displacement truly struck Teresa.
โWe all have our battles,โ Rebecca sighed. โI grew up without my parentsโput myself through school, scraped by. Now Iโve got stability, but life never stops testing you.โ Being an adult meant endless compromises.
Teresa said, โI really want a drink, Rebecca. Do you get how I feel?โ
โNot a chance,โ Rebecca said firmly. โI get it, but no drinking until that babyโs born.โ
Carrying a child changed everything. Every choice now carried double the weight. Teresa knew that. She cradled her belly. โBe kind to Mom, little one.โ
โIs your firstborn a boy or a girl?โ Rebecca asked.
โA boy,โ Teresa replied. โThis time, Iโm hoping for a girl.โ
โClassic,โ Rebecca chuckled. โThe grass is always greener.โ
โGirls are easier, arenโt they?โ
โDepends on the kid,โ Rebecca said. โNo guarantees.โ
โTrue enough,โ Teresa agreed. Then she asked about the babyโs gender.
โNot twins, but too early to tell. Another month, maybe.โ She paused. โAre you considering an abortion?โ
โNo,โ Teresa said sharply. โIโm just curious. This baby is mine. Boy or girlโit doesnโt matter.โ
โThen be patient,โ Rebecca said. โThe surprise will come.โ
Teresa smiled. The way Teresa dipped her chin when smiling made Rebecca think of Jennifer. She shared that same gesture. Yet, where Jenniferโs gaze carried a sharp elegance at the corners, Teresaโs eyes softened into crescent moonsโtheir features holding no true mirror image.
After some idle chat, Teresa prepared to leave. Before leaving, she paused. โWould light exercise be alright?โ She explained, โMy sonโs school is having its annual family sports day.โ
โYouโd better not run or jump. Ask a friend to go to the sports day for you,โ Rebecca advised.
โAlright, I get it,โ Teresa replied.
Rebecca, a few years older, had taken to treating Teresa like a younger sister. โYouโre so pretty. Donโt stay single. Go find yourself a new guy, you totally could.โ
Teresa shook her head. One marriage was more than enough.
Rebecca sighed, sliding a fruit basket toward her. โTake these for your son. I donโt really eat fruit. If you need help, just come find me. Iโm at the clinic on Mondays and Wednesdays.โ
โThanks,โ Teresa said and left.
When Teresa returned home, it was already evening. She went to the kitchen and began to prepare dinner. Michael fiddled with her phone and ran up to her. โMom, you are chatting with Jonathan!โ
Teresa snatched her phone back, scrolling through the messages. Relief washed over herโno strange texts from her son. She quickly changed the passcode.
She fixed him with a stern look. โGo play with your tablet. Donโt sneak my phone again, or Iโll really get mad.โ
Michael pouted. โI just wanted to check if Jonathan texted you. Mom, whyโs Jonathanโs contact name so weird? What does it mean?โ
Teresa had changed Jonathanโs contact name to โSoused Doggy.โ That was because he was always drinking and blacking out.
Michael pointed at the name. โMom, whatโs a โSoused Doggyโ?โ
โUhโฆ Itโs โSnazzy Doggyโ,โ Teresa blurted. โIt means heโsโฆ good-looking!โ
Michael crossed his arms and rolled his eyes. โHmph, donโt try to fool me. I know the word โsnazzy.โ Thatโs not it.โ He peered closer. โIs that โSillyโ? Whyโd you call him โSilly Doggyโ?โ
โItโs not โSilly Doggyโ!โ Teresa groaned. โFine, Iโll change it. Okay?โ
Michael tapped his chin thoughtfully. โHow aboutโฆ โGood Doggyโ?โ
โGood Doggy it is.โ Teresa typed the new name with exaggerated flair.
She scrolled through their short chat history and remembered sheโd once said, โWhoever initiates their conversation becomes the dog.โ After that, they hadnโt spoken again. She thought he had probably come back to Nareigh.
โMom,โ Michael tugged her sleeve. โCan I message Jonathan and ask for another autograph? Heidi tore up the last one.โ
โHeโs probably asleep by now,โ Teresa said, glancing at the time on her phone. โDonโt worry, Iโll ask him tomorrow.โ
With Childrenโs Day around the corner, Teresa headed to the mall after work to buy a gift for Michael. She also bought two athletic shirts.
Ivy, tagging along, raised an eyebrow as she saw Teresa buy a kidโs T-shirt. โWhoโs the kidโs T-shirt for?โ she asked.
โOh, my neighbor asked me to grab it for her kid,โ Teresa answered.
Ivy smirked and leaned in. โDonโt tell me youโre planning to wear one as a crop top.โ
Teresa rolled her eyes. โTheyโre childrenโs sizes. Whatโs wrong with you?โ
โWith your figure, you could totally rock it as a tight top.โ Ivy waved her hands at Teresaโs chest. โFlaunt what youโve got. If I had your figure, Iโd be posting selfies every hour on Facebook. But you? Never see you update anything.โ
Teresa shrugged. She actually used to love posting updates, but ever since Truman tracked her Facebook posts and started stalking her, she lost all interest in sharing her life online.
At that very moment, on the penthouse floor of the building, Jonathan was in the midst of an interview with a financial magazine. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows stretched the breathtaking panorama of Everport.
The interview centered on youth entrepreneurshipโa topic Jonathan spoke on with particular conviction, given that he himself was only thirty years old, at the peak of his prime.
Jonathan said, โEvery young person whoโs brave enough to start a business deserves applause and recognition, no matter how things turn out.โ
โThen Mr. Lynn, whatโs your entrepreneurial success formula?โ asked the host.
โYour own abilities, opportunities, and reliable alliances as well,โ Jonathan answered.
โAh, the trifectaโcompetence, catalyst, and collaboration,โ the host smiled approvingly.
Jonathan nodded. He was polite, yet he still exuded a powerful aura.
โMr. Lynn, you once said that your drive for success was to earn someoneโs approval. Have you gotten that personโs recognition now?โ
A familiar figure flashed through Jonathanโs mind. His eyes softened, and a faint smile appeared on his lips. โYes.โ
โBut from the look on your face, it seems like youโre still not completely satisfiedโmaybe even a little disappointed. Why is that?โ
โWhen you gain something, youโre bound to lose something else,โ Jonathan murmured.
