Chapter 297
โYou were drunk. What could you possibly remember?โ Teresa asked.
Teresa remained calm. โIf thatโs all you want to talk about, then yes, you used protection. Pull over and let me out. I need to get home. Thanks for tonight.โ
Jonathan stared at Teresa for a few seconds. He thought, Did I really use protection? I didnโt see anything in the trash when I woke up.
There was no way Teresa would let Jonathan become suspicious. The protection didnโt matter anymoreโshe was already pregnant. Michael was still waiting for her at home. She couldnโt keep prolonging this with Jonathan.
โYou donโt have to worry about me getting pregnant,โ Teresa said. โIโm not.โ
โJust asking,โ Jonathan said, his eyes landing on her flat stomach. โJust drop me off up ahead at Northwing Avenue.โ
โAs a tourist, you sure know your way around,โ he remarked.
โCanโt I read a map?โ Teresa snapped, clearly annoyed. โWhy do you keep going on about this? Whether Iโm here for a trip has nothing to do with you. I donโt like being bothered.โ
Jonathanโs gaze darkened. โIโm not bothering you. I didnโt even know Iโd run into you today. There are just a few things I need to clear up with you.โ
He retrieved a card from his walletโthe one Teresa had asked Benny to give him earlier, containing $6.8 millionโand handed it back to her. โTake it,โ he said. โEven if weโre divorced, the money I gave you was a gift. Thereโs no need to return it.โ
โI donโt need your money,โ Teresa replied.
โTake it,โ he insisted firmly, making it clear he could stand there all night if she refused.
Teresa accepted it provisionally, planning to have Benny return it once she was back in Nareigh. She hadnโt used a cent of it anyway.
Jonathan produced another cardโthe one sheโd given him when she left Nareigh. Seeing her handwriting, Teresa felt like it was from a previous life. She had left Nareigh at the end of March, and it was already late Mayโalmost two months had passed. It all felt so distant. Jonathan probably felt the same.
โMaybe what youโre holding onto is just the past?โ Jonathan read the words on the card aloud. โIโm not the kind of guy who looks back.โ He continued, reading the next line: โโYou donโt owe me anything anymore. Whether I owe you or not, thatโs not for you to decide.โ The last line: โWishing you happiness. Your ex-wife, Teresa.โ โ Jonathan let out a dry laugh. โYou make it sound like Iโve already moved on. How am I supposed to be happy?โ
Teresa was silent for a moment. โNone of my business. Iโm just your ex-wife.โ
Jonathan said, โIt might not matter to you, but I still want to make things clear. You said you didnโt want to be bothered, and I respected that. I only went to Lonisburg to see you once. Today, itโs just fate pulling the strings.โ
โLetโs just treat this as a chance encounter and go back to our own lives,โ Teresa suggested.
Jonathan stared straight ahead, hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. โWhich hotel are you staying at? Iโll drive you.โ
Teresa frowned, clearly reluctant to tell Jonathan where she was staying. โJust let me off by the side of the road,โ she said.
โWhere do you live? Tell me,โ Jonathan insisted. โEven if you donโt want me around, Iโm not letting you get out alone this late. Itโs not safe.โ
Teresa remained silent. After a few minutes, Jonathan said, โThen Iโll just take you to my hotel. Iโm working here and staying alone at the Golden Diamond Hotel.โ
Teresa knew the Golden Diamond Hotel was the best in Everport, and it was nowhere near her apartment.
โStill not telling me?โ Jonathan asked. โThen Iโm heading there.โ
โI live at Jadeleaf Apartment,โ she finally admitted.
