Chapter 297

โ€œYou were drunk. What could you possibly remember?โ€ Teresa asked.

Teresa remained calm. โ€œIf thatโ€™s all you want to talk about, then yes, you used protection. Pull over and let me out. I need to get home. Thanks for tonight.โ€

Jonathan stared at Teresa for a few seconds. He thought, Did I really use protection? I didnโ€™t see anything in the trash when I woke up.

There was no way Teresa would let Jonathan become suspicious. The protection didnโ€™t matter anymoreโ€”she was already pregnant. Michael was still waiting for her at home. She couldnโ€™t keep prolonging this with Jonathan.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to worry about me getting pregnant,โ€ Teresa said. โ€œIโ€™m not.โ€

โ€œJust asking,โ€ Jonathan said, his eyes landing on her flat stomach. โ€œJust drop me off up ahead at Northwing Avenue.โ€

โ€œAs a tourist, you sure know your way around,โ€ he remarked.

โ€œCanโ€™t I read a map?โ€ Teresa snapped, clearly annoyed. โ€œWhy do you keep going on about this? Whether Iโ€™m here for a trip has nothing to do with you. I donโ€™t like being bothered.โ€

Jonathanโ€™s gaze darkened. โ€œIโ€™m not bothering you. I didnโ€™t even know Iโ€™d run into you today. There are just a few things I need to clear up with you.โ€

He retrieved a card from his walletโ€”the one Teresa had asked Benny to give him earlier, containing $6.8 millionโ€”and handed it back to her. โ€œTake it,โ€ he said. โ€œEven if weโ€™re divorced, the money I gave you was a gift. Thereโ€™s no need to return it.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t need your money,โ€ Teresa replied.

โ€œTake it,โ€ he insisted firmly, making it clear he could stand there all night if she refused.

Teresa accepted it provisionally, planning to have Benny return it once she was back in Nareigh. She hadnโ€™t used a cent of it anyway.

Jonathan produced another cardโ€”the one sheโ€™d given him when she left Nareigh. Seeing her handwriting, Teresa felt like it was from a previous life. She had left Nareigh at the end of March, and it was already late Mayโ€”almost two months had passed. It all felt so distant. Jonathan probably felt the same.

โ€œMaybe what youโ€™re holding onto is just the past?โ€ Jonathan read the words on the card aloud. โ€œIโ€™m not the kind of guy who looks back.โ€ He continued, reading the next line: โ€œโ€˜You donโ€™t owe me anything anymore. Whether I owe you or not, thatโ€™s not for you to decide.โ€™ The last line: โ€˜Wishing you happiness. Your ex-wife, Teresa.โ€™ โ€ Jonathan let out a dry laugh. โ€œYou make it sound like Iโ€™ve already moved on. How am I supposed to be happy?โ€

Teresa was silent for a moment. โ€œNone of my business. Iโ€™m just your ex-wife.โ€

Jonathan said, โ€œIt might not matter to you, but I still want to make things clear. You said you didnโ€™t want to be bothered, and I respected that. I only went to Lonisburg to see you once. Today, itโ€™s just fate pulling the strings.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s just treat this as a chance encounter and go back to our own lives,โ€ Teresa suggested.

Jonathan stared straight ahead, hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. โ€œWhich hotel are you staying at? Iโ€™ll drive you.โ€

Teresa frowned, clearly reluctant to tell Jonathan where she was staying. โ€œJust let me off by the side of the road,โ€ she said.

โ€œWhere do you live? Tell me,โ€ Jonathan insisted. โ€œEven if you donโ€™t want me around, Iโ€™m not letting you get out alone this late. Itโ€™s not safe.โ€

Teresa remained silent. After a few minutes, Jonathan said, โ€œThen Iโ€™ll just take you to my hotel. Iโ€™m working here and staying alone at the Golden Diamond Hotel.โ€

Teresa knew the Golden Diamond Hotel was the best in Everport, and it was nowhere near her apartment.

โ€œStill not telling me?โ€ Jonathan asked. โ€œThen Iโ€™m heading there.โ€

โ€œI live at Jadeleaf Apartment,โ€ she finally admitted.
