It was said that couples shouldn't do it in the first three months, but Teresa forgot last night. She gently stroked her belly. โBaby, forgive me. Itโs all your dadโs fault.โ
โI donโt care how busy you are, Jonathan. You need to come home for the holiday,โ Irene nagged over the phone. โYouโre the eldest grandsonโyou canโt keep skipping these gatherings.โ
Cathy had called Jennifer twice, treating her like a future daughter-in-law. She even took Jennifer shopping and bought her $6,000 worth of jewelry, which Jennifer accepted. If Jennifer skipped another dinner, even Cathyโs patience would run out.
At the hospital, Jennifer pushed the jewelry back toward Donald. โI donโt want this, and Iโm not going to your house.โ
Donald ran a hand through his hair, looking helpless. โPlease, just come. If not for them, then for me.โ
Jennifer shook her head firmly. โNo, Iโm not going. Iโm your brotherโs ex-wifeโs sister. If I go, your relatives will ask all kinds of questions, and Iโll feel out of place.โ
โThey wonโt ask you anything, I promise. Itโs just a mealโdonโt overthink it.โ
โForget it. With your cousin and that old hag Irene there, I have even less reason to go.โ Jenniferโs tone was sharp, making it clear that if Donald pushed her further, she might end things.
Seeing her resolve, Donald sighed, โAlright, Iโll tell my mom youโre busy with work. After dinner, Iโll come find you.โ
Donaldโs understanding made Jennifer feel a pang of guilt. โThanks,โ she murmured.
Donald leaned in and kissed her. โJennifer, oh Jennifer. What am I going to do with you?โ
Jennifer straightened Donaldโs collar and gave him a quick kiss in return. But a kiss was as far as it went. Donald cared deeply for Jennifer, and while he wanted more, he didnโt want to risk scaring her off.
Jennifer noticed his growing desire and blushed. โGo home, Donald. Your familyโs waiting.โ
โAlright, Iโll call you later,โ Donald said before leaving.
Cathyโs expression darkened. A flicker of displeasure and unease crossed her face. She felt disappointedโDonald was genuinely looking forward to marriage, but Jennifer didnโt seem to share the same enthusiasm.
Irene strolled over, letting out a scoff. โIโve been saying all along that womanโs no good. Acting all high and mighty just to have dinner with us. Anyone who didnโt know better might think the Lynn family was begging her to come.โ
โIrene, Jennifer and I have only been dating for a short time. Things are still a bit uncertain,โ Donald said, trying to smooth things over.
โUncertain? Still?โ Irene sneered, her tone sharp. โDonald, itโs been nearly two months since your car accident, hasnโt it? Your mom keeps praising this girlfriend of yours, but honestly, I donโt see whatโs so great about her.โ
โIrene, thatโs enough. Hayden will be here soon,โ Cathy said with a sigh, cutting her off. Irene pressed her lips together and didnโt say anything more.
Just as Cathy finished speaking, Hayden arrived. Donaldโs father, Werner, helped Hayden into the room. Hayden leaned on his cane, which tapped against the floor with each step. โItโs been ages since I last saw Cheryl. And Jonathan, that rascal, still hasnโt come home,โ Hayden muttered, shaking his head.
Turning to Donald, Haydenโs gaze sharpened. โDonald, whereโs your girlfriend? Didnโt I tell you to bring her along for dinner?โ
โGrandpa, sheโs a gynecologist and also the deputy director at her hospital. Itโs a busy time of yearโlots of babies being born around May,โ Donald explained apologetically.
โI see,โ Hayden said, disappointment flickering in his eyes. He didnโt press further.
Donald quickly shifted the topic. โGrandpa, Iโll go orderโโ
โNo need, Donald. Let Jonathan handle the ordering later,โ Irene interjected.
Cathy frowned. โIrene, we canโt always let Jonathan pay. This time, Donald will treat us. Donald, go ahead and order the dishes.โ
As Donald headed downstairs, Irene immediately pulled out her phone to call Jonathan. He had clearly said heโd be back in Nareigh today, yet he hadnโt shown up yet.
