Chapter 267
โHow far have you two gotten? Are you planning to make me a great-grandpa soon?โ Hayden teased, grinning at Donald.
โGrandpa, come on. Canโt I have some privacy?โ Donald said, his face flushing red.
โLook at you, blushing like a kid. And you didnโt even bring her over for dinnerโhow am I supposed to meet her?โ Hayden laughed heartily.
โSheโs a bit shy, Grandpa. Iโll see if sheโs okay with coming over next time, maybe during the holidays,โ Donald replied, trying to deflect.
Hayden chuckled, clearly amused by Donaldโs bashful demeanor. โYou and your sister-in-lawโs sisterโif this works out, itโll be a fun twist for the family.โ
Turning to Cathy, Hayden added, โDonald and Teresaโs sister are a good match. Donโt stand in the way of his happiness.โ
Cathy nodded thoughtfully. โAs long as the kids are willing, thatโs what matters. It all depends on whether theyโre truly meant to be together in the end.โ
โDonald, youโre way more dependable than Jonathan. Why donโt you help him patch things up with his wife and get them back together?โ Hayden suggested.
โI understand, Grandpa. Iโll do my best,โ Donald assured him with a firm nod.
As dinner wrapped up, Werner and his friends had a bit too much to drink. Cathy took Werner home, while Donald escorted Hayden back. Even on the way back, Hayden reminded him, โNext time you visit, make sure to bring Teresaโs sister over for dinner.โ Donald agreed.
When Donald returned home, Cathy sighed and muttered, โI wonder if Jennifer looks down on our family.โ
Donald was puzzled by Cathyโs sudden remark. Placing his hands on her shoulders, he said, โMom, why would Jennifer look down on our family? What gave you that impression?โ
Cathy explained, โActually, I called Jennifer. I hinted that it was your dadโs birthday and invited her to join us for dinner. Since sheโs someone youโve chosen, I thought it was enough that you liked her. When we first met, I thought she was fine. But the more I interacted with her, the more I felt she was hard to get along with.โ
โMom, Jennifer isnโt like that. Sheโs just shy. She felt too embarrassed to come. Give her a bit more time, and sheโllโฆโ Donald reassured her, not wanting Cathy to have a negative impression of Jennifer.
Seeing how much Donald cared for Jennifer, Cathy gave a resigned smile. โYou know the way things went today. If you two really end up together, Irene will definitely be the first to object.โ
โMom, Iโm building a life with Jennifer, not with Irene. Besides, Grandpa adores Jennifer. He even asked me to help Jonathan and Teresa reconcile. Wouldnโt that make us even closer as a family?โ Donald said with a grin.
With Donaldโs comforting words, Cathy finally let go of her concerns. โAlright, as long as youโre happy, thatโs all that matters. No one else can decide for you.โ
Jennifer was busy with work at the hospital, and Donald, who had the morning shift the next day, was also swamped when he arrived. It wasnโt until lunchtime that they finally managed to sit down for a meal together.
Noticing the oil glistening at the corner of his lips, Jennifer grabbed a napkin and wiped his mouth. โYesterday was your dadโs birthday. Did Irene show up? Was she badmouthing me behind my back again?โ
Donald chuckled and took her hand gently. โYouโre worrying too much. Irene didnโt say anything about you. Actually, Grandpa seems to like you a lot. Heโs already insisting on meeting you next time.โ
โReally? You still have a grandfather?โ Jennifer asked, raising an eyebrow.
Donald nodded, his gaze softening. โYeah, Grandpa was really fond of Teresa. When he found out youโre her sister, he wouldnโt stop talking about wanting to meet you. Heโs already told me to bring you home for dinner next time.โ
Jenniferโs brows furrowed slightly. โI donโt want to go to your house or meet your family. Unless weโre married, I donโt see the point. And right now, Iโm not ready for marriage.โ
Donald nodded, his tone understanding. โIโm not trying to push you into marriage or anything. I just really like you and want you to meet my family. You wouldnโt believe how lonely I felt yesterday at the dinner table.โ
โWhat about your sister?โ Jennifer asked.
โShe didnโt come back. Sheโs hosting an art exhibition out of town,โ Donald replied. Jenniferโs brows knitted together again. Hearing that Cheryl wasnโt coming home and was supposedly hosting an art exhibition made her think of something, but she decided not to press the issue.
โAnyway, let me make this clearโIโm not going to your house. I trust in love, but marriage? Thatโs a whole different story. You should understand what I mean.โ
Donald glanced at Jenniferโs calm, composed face and let out a helpless sigh. โItโs fine. Grandpa probably wonโt be back until the spring holidays anyway. Weโll talk about it then.โ
Jennifer gave a small nod in response.
Switching the topic, Donald scooped all the meat from his plate onto hers. โCome on, eat up. Have some more. The more you fill out, the happier Iโll be.โ
Jennifer shot back, โYouโre one to talk. Youโre so skinny yourself. You should eat more, too.โ
Donald grinned mischievously. โIโm not skinny because I eat less. Itโs because youโve been tormenting me all this timeโkeeping me on edge, teasing me. The stress made it hard for me to eat or sleep properly.โ
Jennifer glared at him. โWhoโs been tormenting you or teasing you?โ
Donald immediately raised his hands in mock surrender, taking her hand again. โAlright, alright, I take it back. But now that Iโve finally won your heart, having you by my side makes me the happiest man alive.โ
Jenniferโs lips curved into a faint smile. Having someone so warm and caring by her side made her feel happy too.
