Chapter 133
Michael asked, โBut what about your mommy and daddy? Iโve never seen them before.โ
โTheyโโ A tear fell into the ravioli as Teresa choked up. She quickly wiped her tears. โTheyโre busy.โ
Since severing ties with Philip, sheโd lost all contact. She knew heโd gone abroad but wasnโt sure where. As for Evelyn, Teresa figured she was likely celebrating New Yearโs Eve dinner with her new husband and daughter, giving Teresa no second thought. Year after year, day after day, Teresa felt she had no family.
Teresa lowered her head. โIโm sorry, Michael.โ
Michael blinked, confused. โWhat for?โ
Teresa said, โSorry for putting you through this.โ
Michael continued eating his ravioli. โThis isnโt bitter,โ he said between bites. โIt actually has kind of a sweet aftertaste.โ
Teresa felt warmth spread through her heart and gently patted Michaelโs head.
Michael asked, โHave you bought tickets for the Paddington movie?โ
Teresa nodded and said, rather flatteringly, โIโve made plans. Iโll be going back to work on January 4th, so I can spend a few more days with you. We can go watch movies or visit an amusement park. Iโll take you anywhere you want to go.โ
If Jonathan could do those things with Michael, then so could she. She would live a simple and peaceful life with her sonโjust the two of them.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
Michael jumped up excitedly. โCould it be Mr. Lime? Iโll get it!โ
Teresa advised him not to open the door immediately and to check who the visitor was first. However, the door was already open. Michael looked up, and a trace of disappointment flickered in his eyes. โMommy, itโs Ms. Doctor.โ
Jennifer was carrying candies, nuts, and other New Yearโs gifts. She smiled. โIโm celebrating with you guys!โ
Teresa was taken aback. Jennifer rubbed her hands together. โSo cold outside! Hardly anyoneโs out on the streets!โ
Teresa handed her a cup of warm water. โDid you drive here?โ
โYeah,โ Jennifer replied. โI was feeling really lonely at home. I thought you and Michael might be here, so I decided to drop by.โ
Teresa handed her a fork. โYou havenโt eaten yet, right? We still have some ravioli left from the last time we made them together. Michael and I cooked them today.โ
Jennifer asked, โYouโre only having ravioli?โ
Michael snorted. โBecause Mommy doesnโt know how to cook.โ
Teresa glared at him as if saying, โYou talk too much.โ
Jennifer said, โThis is so sad. Let me cook a few dishes.โ
Teresa didnโt want to trouble Jennifer, but the latter said it wasnโt any trouble and it would be quick. Otherwise, just having ravioli with walnuts would be sad.
โBy the way, didnโt you say you have a sister? Arenโt you going to invite her over for the holidays?โ asked Teresa.
Jennifer paused while cooking, a slight smile appearing on her face. โShe just texted me today wishing me a happy new year.โ
Teresa smiled. โReally? You managed to get in touch with her? Thatโs great.โ
Jennifer stopped talking. She cooked four dishes and set them on the table. Michael took a potato wedge, chewed it, and said, โItโs tasty, but not quite as good as Mr. Limeโs.โ
Teresa scolded, โShe is nice enough to cook for us. How could you be so picky?โ
Michael snorted. โIโm not. Iโm really grateful.โ
Jennifer watched the pair bicker and couldnโt help but laugh. โMike, what do you want to eat next time? Iโll make you something else. How about braised short ribs or fried chicken wings?โ
โYes, please.โ Michael clapped his hands. โI really love meat.โ
Michael fell asleep soon after dinner. Jennifer and Teresa sat and chatted, accompanied by some wine. Seeing Teresa scrolling through her phone, Jennifer joked, โWho are you texting? Your ex-husband?โ
Teresa replied, โNo. I wished my mom a happy new year, but she didnโt reply. Iโm kind of regretting it now. I shouldnโt have disturbed her. She probably thinks I mass-texted or something.โ
Jennifer was annoyed. โDonโt bother sending her anything next time. Sheโs remarried and has a child. She doesnโt care about you anymore.โ
Teresa was surprised. โHow do you know about my mom?โ
Jenniferโs eyes flickered. โYou told me before. You probably forgot.โ
Teresa didnโt think much of it. โEven though sheโs remarried, it hasnโt been easy for her. Sheโs been working hard all these years, waiting for the right person. No matter what, sheโs still my mom, and I want her to be happy.โ
