“But I was outsmarted. I didn’t marry him, and Eason thought I couldn’t run the company and never meant to give it to me. I was angry. I blamed Jonathan and your sister, especially your sister. I thought she was stopping me from getting rich.”
By then, Daphne had calmed down a bit. “Ten years ago, I swore that if I survived, I’d kill everyone who ruined my chance to get rich. I’d rather bully others than let anyone hurt me, not even a little.
“I had no idea Teresa’s brother would turn out to be you. After we went our separate ways, I never thought I’d run into you again. Honestly, I thought I’d never see you for the rest of my life.
“To be honest, over the years, I’ve become tough and nothing affects me anymore. My people looked into your background. When they told me your name was Lucas, I still didn’t realize it was you. I just never thought you’d have the last name Davis.
“I’m the vengeful type. Initially, I planned to have my men torture you severely, enough to make Teresa so upset she’d go into early labor and teach her and her family a lesson. But when they sent me your photo, I recognized you right away.
“I didn’t expect you’d show up again, let alone be Teresa’s brother. By the time I got there, you’d already been beaten up, so I told them to stop and not lay another finger on you.”
At this point, Daphne sniffled. “You know what happened next. Even when I tied you up and hung you there, I was just trying to scare you. When I saw you fall, I panicked. I never wanted to hurt you, not even for a moment.”
Lucas listened, not sure what to say. He was silent for a long time. He said, “Honestly, I haven’t exactly had a good life either. For the past thirty years, I’ve been tormented by my adoptive mother.
“That’s why I didn’t tell you my last name was Dunn back then. It was her last name, and I used to dislike it. I only recently reconnected with my biological mom and my sister.”
Daphne looked up at Lucas, her heart twisting painfully when she heard him mention that he’d once tried to end his life by taking sleeping pills.
Lucas said, “Back then, I felt the same as you. I didn’t want to live, so I took many sleeping pills. When I was about to die, Jonathan and Teresa saved me. They’ve always been good to me. Honestly, they’re not trying to hurt you.”
Daphne looked away and let out a sigh. “If Jonathan had just let me cash out, I would’ve taken hundreds of millions and disappeared. I never planned to hurt them or anything.
“But then the Lynn family broke off the engagement, and after that, no rich heirs wanted to be set up with me. Eason thought I was useless too, so of course I resented him.”
Lucas shot back, “But the one you hurt was my sister. You almost made her go into early labor; she could’ve died.
Daphne lowered her head. “Sorry, Lucas. I know I was wrong. I paid the price. Jonathan threw me on broken glass. I was covered in blood, stayed in the hospital a long time, and was detained for half a month.”
Even when she was detained, she couldn’t help but keep worrying about Lucas, always thinking about how he was doing. Daphne grabbed Lucas’s hand.
Daphne choked up. “Lucas, give me one more chance. Have some pity on me. I’ve bottled things up for years. That’s why I got extreme. Sometimes I even hate myself. I had no choice, I was just trying to survive.”
Daphne said, “You must believe me. I’m truly sincere towards you. I can give up money and this fake identity. Let’s just run away together. As long as I’m with you, I don’t care about anything else.”
