Chapter 1072
Jonathan waited downstairs until midnight, but Teresa showed no sign of leaving work. Finally, he couldnโt hold back any longer and called her. The phone rang for a long time. โHello,โ Teresa answered.
Hearing her slurred voice, Jonathan frowned and asked, โHave you been drinking again?โ
โI havenโt been drinking. Iโm working,โ Teresa sniffled. โIs Felix asleep? You guys should go to bed early.โ Without waiting for Jonathan to respond, she hung up.
Hearing the busy tone on the other end, Jonathan got out of the car.
Teresa was sitting alone on the sofa, drinking. When she heard a knock at the door, she got up to open it. She never expected Jonathan to come. โWhy are you here?โ she asked.
โI wanted to see why youโre still here so late,โ Jonathan replied. He walked in and immediately noticed the two empty bottles of whisky sitting on the table.
Teresa quickly wiped away her tears. โI was just working. I got thirsty and couldnโt find any water, so I just had some whisky instead.โ
Jonathan turned around and stared at her. โI donโt believe it. If somethingโs bothering you, you can talk to me.โ
Teresa took a deep breath and forced a smile. โNo need. I still have a lot of work to do, so I should get back to it.โ
Jonathan gently turned Teresa to face him and placed his hands on her shoulders. โI know this is about your mom. How about I move out? Itโs not like I only have that one villa in Nareigh.โ
โThereโs no need for you to do that. If you want to kick me out, Iโll move out,โ Teresa said.
โWhy would I ever want you to leave? I donโt want you to get into trouble with your mom because of all this,โ Jonathan replied. He knew just how much Teresa cared about her family. All he cared about was how she felt.
โNever mind,โ Teresa insisted. โI donโt have any trouble with my mom. No matter what I do, she always thinks Iโm wrong anyway.โ
Jonathan didnโt say a word, just kept his eyes fixed on her face. His palm touched her flushed cheek. โWhatโs up with your face?โ
โNothing,โ Teresa brushed his hand away, not wanting to talk about it.
โDoes your mom hit you?โ Jonathan asked, his voice full of concern.
โNo,โ Teresa replied, her eyes brimming with tears that she stubbornly held back.
Jonathan reached out again, carefully touching her face, his feelings complicated. โDid she hit you today? Does it hurt?โ
โIt doesnโt hurt. We just argued, and I know Evelyn was just anxious. But I honestly donโt know what I did wrong. No matter what I do, she never approves of me. It was the same when I married you, and now itโs happening again."
โSheโs never like this with Jennifer or Isabel. She always raises her voice at me, but with them, sheโs always so gentle and soft-spoken,โ Teresa said, her voice shaky. Her tears started streaming down uncontrollably.
Jonathan gently wiped away her tears. โDonโt cry, okay? Iโll go with you to see Evelyn tomorrow. We can sit down and talk things through.โ
โItโs fine,โ Teresa shook her head. โI donโt want to see her anymore. Sheโll never see me as good enough, no matter what I do.โ She lowered her head; her tears just kept falling.
Jonathan pulled her into his arms. โLetโs try to talk things out, okay? If you donโt want to, I can talk to her for you.โ
โNo, I donโt want that,โ Teresa said, her shoulders starting to tremble, fists clenched tight.
