It was ironic. Irene would often complain that Jonathan never spent time with her while he was married to Teresa. Now, Jonathan was with her all the time, and she wasnโ€™t happy about it at all.

โ€œJonathan, can you find me somewhere else to live?โ€ Irene said.

โ€œWhat, youโ€™re sick of this place already?โ€ Jonathan asked, a teasing glint in his eyes. โ€œSure, we can move. Weโ€™re done with Archulea. Whatโ€™s next on your list? Londinov? Pillere? Makes no difference to me.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to go to any of those places. This buildingโ€™s way too high. I canโ€™t relax living up here.โ€ Ireneโ€™s heart was racing. She couldnโ€™t even walk near the window to look down.

The older Irene got, the more she hated heights. She didnโ€™t want a penthouse in the sky. She wanted a sprawling, single-story house with her feet on solid ground.

โ€œFine,โ€ Jonathan said smoothly. โ€œThen Iโ€™ll get you a villaโ€ฆโ€

Irene cut him off. โ€œI want to go home. Heidi called. She needs to see me about something. I really should go check on her.โ€ She was throwing Heidiโ€™s name around as an excuse.

Jonathan was unfazed. โ€œEasy fix. Iโ€™ll fly Heidi out here for a few days. You can have all the time with her you want.โ€

Irene went quiet. Jonathanโ€™s eyes were already back on the file. โ€œLetโ€™s be clear. Going home is not an option. If we go back, I canโ€™t give you my undivided attention. And then I wouldnโ€™t be a good son, would I?

โ€œBesides, if you go back and pull your usual stunts on Teresa, who do you think is going to clean up your mess?โ€

Cornered, Irene struggled to find words. โ€œIf you just stop talking to Teresa, Iโ€™ll leave her alone.โ€

Jonathan said bluntly, โ€œI canโ€™t promise that.โ€

Ireneโ€™s voice cracked. โ€œJonathan, what do you want from me?โ€

Jonathan closed the file and raised an eyebrow. โ€œActually, thatโ€™s what I should be asking you. Iโ€™m ignoring everyone else. My entire world is all about you, just like you wanted.

โ€œGeez, Iโ€™m treating you better than Dad ever did. Iโ€™ve given you my money and all of my time. So, tell me. Are we even yet?โ€

Irene was left speechless. She stomped back to her room, fuming. But she still wouldnโ€™t give an inch when it came to Teresa.

Two days later was New Yearโ€™s Day. Michaelโ€™s preschool in Nareigh was closed, so Teresa didnโ€™t need to drop him off.

Michael woke up bright and early, even before Teresa. When she got up, she found him sitting by the front door, waiting intently.

โ€œSweetie, what are you doing sitting there?โ€ Teresa asked.

โ€œMom,โ€ Michael whipped around, his face beaming. โ€œIโ€™m waiting for Mr. Lime! He said heโ€™d come back on the first, and todayโ€™s the first.โ€

Teresaโ€™s heart clenched. She swallowed hard, forcing the tears back down as she gently said, โ€œSweetie, todayโ€™s January first. He meant February first.โ€

Michaelโ€™s little face crumpled. โ€œWhat? So, Mr. Lime isnโ€™t coming back today?โ€

Teresa nodded, thinking, โ€˜Heโ€™s not coming back. Maybe he never will.โ€™ But one look at Michaelโ€™s sweet face and those hopeful eyes, and the words died in her throat.

โ€œMom, can I call Mr. Lime? With my kiddie phone?โ€ Michael asked.

Teresa hesitated. He immediately started tugging on her arm, aiming his pleading eyes right at her. โ€œPlease, prettiest mommy in the whole world?โ€

She could never say no when he did that. โ€œOkay, okay,โ€ she sighed, handing him the kiddie phone.

Michael thought for a second. โ€œItโ€™s nighttime where Mr. Lime is, right? Iโ€™ll call him later.โ€

โ€œSure thing, sweetie,โ€ she said warmly.

Teresa ran to the office for a bit, and she was back home by noon. Amy had already made lunch and had it waiting on the table.

โ€œAmy, come on, sit down and eat with us,โ€ Teresa said.

โ€œOh, Ms. Johnston, you two go ahead. Iโ€™ll just go check on Felix,โ€ Amy replied.

โ€œI just did. Heโ€™s out cold. Please, Amy, eat with us,โ€ Teresa said again.
