Chapter 1045

It was ironic. Irene would often complain that Jonathan never spent time with her while he was married to Teresa. Now, Jonathan was with her all the time, and she wasnโt happy about it at all.
โJonathan, can you find me somewhere else to live?โ Irene said.
โWhat, youโre sick of this place already?โ Jonathan asked, a teasing glint in his eyes. โSure, we can move. Weโre done with Archulea. Whatโs next on your list? Londinov? Pillere? Makes no difference to me.โ
โI donโt want to go to any of those places. This buildingโs way too high. I canโt relax living up here.โ Ireneโs heart was racing. She couldnโt even walk near the window to look down.
The older Irene got, the more she hated heights. She didnโt want a penthouse in the sky. She wanted a sprawling, single-story house with her feet on solid ground.
โFine,โ Jonathan said smoothly. โThen Iโll get you a villaโฆโ
Irene cut him off. โI want to go home. Heidi called. She needs to see me about something. I really should go check on her.โ She was throwing Heidiโs name around as an excuse.
Jonathan was unfazed. โEasy fix. Iโll fly Heidi out here for a few days. You can have all the time with her you want.โ
Irene went quiet. Jonathanโs eyes were already back on the file. โLetโs be clear. Going home is not an option. If we go back, I canโt give you my undivided attention. And then I wouldnโt be a good son, would I?
โBesides, if you go back and pull your usual stunts on Teresa, who do you think is going to clean up your mess?โ
Cornered, Irene struggled to find words. โIf you just stop talking to Teresa, Iโll leave her alone.โ
Jonathan said bluntly, โI canโt promise that.โ
Ireneโs voice cracked. โJonathan, what do you want from me?โ
Jonathan closed the file and raised an eyebrow. โActually, thatโs what I should be asking you. Iโm ignoring everyone else. My entire world is all about you, just like you wanted.
โGeez, Iโm treating you better than Dad ever did. Iโve given you my money and all of my time. So, tell me. Are we even yet?โ
Irene was left speechless. She stomped back to her room, fuming. But she still wouldnโt give an inch when it came to Teresa.
Two days later was New Yearโs Day. Michaelโs preschool in Nareigh was closed, so Teresa didnโt need to drop him off.

Michael woke up bright and early, even before Teresa. When she got up, she found him sitting by the front door, waiting intently.
โSweetie, what are you doing sitting there?โ Teresa asked.
โMom,โ Michael whipped around, his face beaming. โIโm waiting for Mr. Lime! He said heโd come back on the first, and todayโs the first.โ
Teresaโs heart clenched. She swallowed hard, forcing the tears back down as she gently said, โSweetie, todayโs January first. He meant February first.โ
Michaelโs little face crumpled. โWhat? So, Mr. Lime isnโt coming back today?โ
Teresa nodded, thinking, โHeโs not coming back. Maybe he never will.โ But one look at Michaelโs sweet face and those hopeful eyes, and the words died in her throat.
โMom, can I call Mr. Lime? With my kiddie phone?โ Michael asked.
Teresa hesitated. He immediately started tugging on her arm, aiming his pleading eyes right at her. โPlease, prettiest mommy in the whole world?โ
She could never say no when he did that. โOkay, okay,โ she sighed, handing him the kiddie phone.
Michael thought for a second. โItโs nighttime where Mr. Lime is, right? Iโll call him later.โ
โSure thing, sweetie,โ she said warmly.
Teresa ran to the office for a bit, and she was back home by noon. Amy had already made lunch and had it waiting on the table.
โAmy, come on, sit down and eat with us,โ Teresa said.
โOh, Ms. Johnston, you two go ahead. Iโll just go check on Felix,โ Amy replied.
โI just did. Heโs out cold. Please, Amy, eat with us,โ Teresa said again.
