Chapter 76
Kelly shot her a look. “You’re seeing you don’t miss your husband, Professor,” she chipped at Melissa’s, nervous that other ears might overhear. “Keep your voice down.”
“Professor Butler, I’d be parading him around town all day! — What’s the point of having a good-looking husband? If I had a…”
Leon wasn’t some trophy to show off to the world. You were the one who said… if the students found out I married Professor Butler, they’d mob me, Kelly reminded her, giving her a pointed look.
“I never mind that. I’ve got some…”
Kelly perked up. “Word is, Ide and Celeste have been fighting nonstop lately. Last time, Celeste even declared she wanted a break-up in front of all their friends. Jude somehow managed to get her back, though.”
To be honest, Kelly hadn’t seen Jude around in a while. Not that it mattered anymore. He was nothing to her now.
“Celeste even noted us to their so-day anniversary party. At this rate, I don’t know if they’ll make it to a hundred days! Just goes to show that couples who last… that’s why people have to keep things low-key,” Melissa let out a wicked laugh.
Melissa thought Kelly was the most amazing woman she knew. Jude was blind to have let her go. Meanwhile, Celeste was always so smug and arrogant. Melissa just couldn’t imagine them being happy together.
“That’s exactly why I have to keep things low-key with Leon,” Kelly muttered under her breath.
Right after she said that, her phone started buzzing. It was William calling. It was weird for him to call. They barely even spoke face-to-face, let alone on a phone call.
“Why’s your dad calling?” Melissa had seen the caller ID, too.
“No idea,” Kelly replied quietly.
Melissa rolled her eyes. “It’s probably nothing good.”
Her phone continued to buzz incessantly. In the end, Kelly finally answered the call. “Dad? What’s going on?”
William answered, “Kelly, your brother hurt himself while playing basketball. He broke his leg. He’s in the hospital. You need to come now.”
Kelly made it to the hospital between classes. As soon as she opened the door to the room, she heard Helena crying. “Why can’t he have the surgery now? Broken! Are you trying to scam us by making him stay longer? You people are heartless! If you don’t operate now, I swear I’ll file a complaint! My poor baby! He’s in so much pain.”
His leg is…
The doctor looked visibly exasperated. “Ma’am, I’ve explained this several times. With fractures like this, you can’t operate right away. We need to wait for the swelling to go down before proceeding with surgery.”
Kelly entered the room. It was a shared hospital room with two beds; Jackson’s bed was underneath… Helena and William looked like they were ready to fight the doctor.
When Helena saw her, she instantly found her confidence. Straightening her back, she said to the doctor, “My daughter studies medicine too, so don’t think you can fool me! You’re going to operate on my son right now!”
The doctor turned to Kelly. Before the swelling goes down, it can cause serious complications. We’re in a hospital. You need to trust the professionals…
Kelly felt utterly embarrassed. She walked toward Helena and said, “Mom, if they have the surgery before the swelling goes down, it can cause serious complications. We’re in a hospital. You need to trust the professionals…”
Then she turned to the doctor, her voice softer, “I’m really sorry. My mom’s just worried about my brother. She didn’t mean to be rude.”
The doctor let out a breath. “Well, since you’re studying medicine too, I’ll keep you updated on your brother’s condition from now on.”
Kelly hesitated, then shook her head. “I’m still a student. I can’t make decisions for my brother.”
