Chapter 71

Back in their house, Leon got a phone call. Kelly couldn’t hear what the other person was saying, but Leon replied calmly, “Yes, I did raise those concerns before. Some of those controversial points really shouldn’t be in the textbooks. I’ll take a look.”

“If you’ve brought me in to help revise them, then I intend to take responsibility. Okay. Send it over,” He hung up and hummed, to find Kelly staring at him. “What is it?”

“You’re working on rewriting textbooks?” she asked, her voice sounding slightly awed.

“Yeah. Just got the assignment not long ago.”

Kelly was amazed by how composed Leon was. If she ever got the chance to help revise a textbook, she’d post on her social media to brag about it. Perhaps Leon was already used to handling such impressive tasks.

Another thought struck her. “So, does that mean you’ll be involved in preparing exams in the future too?”

Leon nodded. “Most likely.”

Kelly instantly gave him a sweet smile. The second he saw her expression, Leon knew exactly what she was thinking. His expression shifted into a serious frown. “When it comes to teaching, I’m always fair and professional.”

The eager grin on her face froze at his words.

“In fact, I might be even harder on you because you’re my wife. Don’t forget how many tutoring sessions you’ve already had from me,” Kelly’s smile dropped. “What happened to being fair and professional?”

Leon chuckled, “That’s one of the perks of being my wife.”

That wasn’t a perk at all. If she’d known this was part of the marriage package, she never would have said yes.

Leon caught the shift in her expression and smiled. “You go rest. I need to finish a bit of work.”

Kelly hesitated. “Aren’t you going to sleep for a bit?”

He hadn’t really slept the night before. Leon added, “You want to use the study?”

“I’ll just work in the living room.” She wanted to say more, but Leon gave her a gentle look. In the end, she obediently went to the study.

If she wanted to make use of this so-called perk, she figured she’d better go all out this semester and finally conquer anatomy.

Kelly opened her book and started working through the questions. Time passed slowly, and the soft light illuminated her face as she focused. The buzz of her phone pulled her attention away from the questions. She stretched her arm, sore from writing, and glanced at her phone. Her expression fell when she saw it was Helena calling. After more than two weeks, it seemed that Helena finally remembered she had a daughter. Kelly set down her pen and answered. “Hi, Mom.”

Helena went straight to the point. “Are you on campus?”

Kelly lied, “Yes.”

“I heard from Carol that you went to the hospital today?”

So, that was why she called. “Yes,” Kelly replied.

“Why didn’t you tell us you were sick?”

“It wasn’t serious, so I didn’t want to make a fuss.”

“Are you feeling better now?” Helena asked.

“Pretty much.”

“Make sure you take all the medicine the doctor gave you, alright? Don’t take your health lightly—”

Something tugged at Kelly’s heart. She felt pathetic for some reason. She’d thought she’d completely given up on expecting anything from her family. But the moment Helena showed a little concern, she still felt touched.

“I know,” Kelly said, her voice softening.

But Helena’s next words mined the moment. “Next time, just tell me if there’s anything, okay? Do you know how embarrassing it was when Carol brought it up to me today?”

“Do you know how thoughtful Susan’s daughter is? She tells her parents everything. But you? You’ve always been so quiet around us, like we’re enemies.”
