Chapter 69

Leon raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by this new identity he'd just acquired.

“Yeah, aren’t you the Uber driver?” Carol asked, leaning in through the open window, genuinely confused.

Kelly panicked and turned her back slightly to Carol, giving Leon a pleading look. Leon quickly caught onto the situation. So, he’d been demoted from her husband to an Uber driver. There was a flicker of amusement in his eyes. He watched Kelly silently beg for his help, tested his hand casually on the steering wheel, and said smoothly, “I just listen to my passenger. Whatever she says.”

His words sounded rather intimate, and if Carol didn’t quickly believe he was just a driver, she might have started to get suspicious.

She turned back to Kelly. “Would it be alright? Don’t worry. I’ll cover the extra fare. It’s just impossible to get a ride here. I waited over ten minutes last time.” Kelly glanced at Leon, silently asking what to do.

Leon replied gently, “It’s your call.”

Since she’d known Caml for years, Kelly gave in and nodded.

Carol climbed into the backseat, looking delighted. She ran her hands over the leather seats, eyes wide as she looked around. She was clearly impressed. She’d never recognized the brand before, but recently her son had been car shopping and she’d tagged along. She remembered this exact model. It was sleek, powerful, and undeniably impressive. She had suggested he buy it, but he told her it cost over a hundred thousand and was way out of his league. She never thought she would get a chance to Uber in this car.

“Kelly, you’re so lucky. Thanks to you. I finally get to sit in a car like this.” Carol was overjoyed; she even pulled out her phone to record a video. She had to show this off to her son later.

Kelly gave a nervous smile, “It’s nothing, really.”

Carol looked around again. “Bet the fare for a car like this costs more than usual, huh?”

Kelly’s smile grew even more sheepish. “More or less.”

Carol chuckled and patted the seat again. Then she turned to Leon. “Young man, how come you’re driving a fancy car like this for work? Aren’t you afraid someone…”

Kelly snuck a glance at Leon, worrying that he would be annoyed by the chatter. But Leon, who was as patient as ever, answered calmly, “I only drive it occasionally.”

“Times are tough, huh? Everyone’s picking up extra work. My son’s working two jobs himself. You’re probably doing this for the same reason, right?” Carol asked. Leon smiled and replied, “Yeah. Just got married recently. My wife’s pregnant. Gotta make a little extra for the baby.”

Kelly instantly felt her face go hot.

Carol, completely oblivious to the rising tension in the car, clapped her hands. “Oh, you’re married? That’s great! You seem like a responsible guy. I can tell you’ll make a great husband and dad.”

Leon glanced sideways at Kelly. “You’d have to ask my wife about that,” he said.

Kelly remained silent, wishing that Leon would stop speaking about the topic in such a serious tone. Finally, they arrived at Carol’s place. As soon as the car came to a stop, she pulled some cash out of her purse.

It was so out of character for him. “Kelly, tell me how much it is and I’ll give you money. You can pay on the app for me,” Carol said.

Kelly couldn’t possibly take her money. Besides, this wasn’t even a real Uber. Leon would never accept her money. “Ms. Teller, don’t worry about it. It’s no big deal,” she said quickly.
