Chapter 62
Kelly and Leon were quiet, and a few seconds passed in silence. Kelly didn't even dare to check Leon's expression. She didn't want Stella to find out that she was married, so she roughly explained, “He’s not my uncle, but he’s…” It wasn’t wrong to claim her husband as her family.
Leon rolled his eyes and stepped forward, placing his arm over Kelly’s shoulder naturally. Kelly’s heart skipped, and she heard him say, “Nice to meet you. I’m Kelly’s…” He drifted off for a split second, and Kelly felt her scalp tingle, for she was worried that he would say the word “husband.” “Family,” he finished, and sensed her body relaxing; the edges of his lips turning upward unnoticeably.
Meanwhile, Stella observed them. Although they claimed to be family, there was an inexplicable intimacy between them. Especially the look in Leon’s eyes. Although there was a trace of gentleness and friendliness, it carried possessiveness at the same time.
Just then, Stella’s boyfriend’s cellphone rang. After he was done with the call, he said to her, “Joe and the others have arrived.” Hearing that, Stella turned to Kelly, “We’re going to meet our friends now. Let’s catch up next time.” “Sure,” Kelly nodded.
They were gone, but Leon’s arm was still on her shoulders, and the weight felt heavy. Tentatively, Kelly stole a look at Leon and met his deep-set eyes. Leon smiled. “Get in the car, family,” he said.
While Kelly was speechless, he led her toward the car, wrapping his arm around her shoulders. Today, he held her hand and hugged her shoulders, making her a little dizzy. Since their conversation the night before, they had become slightly closer.
In the car, Kelly was still rejoicing by herself when Leon said, “Don’t forget to free up some time next weekend.” “What’s up?” she asked, puzzled.
“It’s the day for your prenatal checkup.” Leon actually remembered it better than her. Kelly nodded. “Okay,” she said. “Do you have your pregnancy planner?” he asked.
“I don’t have it with me. It’s in my parents’ house,” she replied. “Should we make a trip there?” he suggested. “Now?” Kelly gasped in surprise. Leon checked the time. “It’s still early now, so we have time to go there. It’s your call.”
It was the weekend, and there was a big chance that her family was home. It was only a matter of time before she picked up the planner, and she would be busier on weekdays. After contemplating, she agreed, “Okay.” Then, she quickly added, “Wait for me at the side of the stove.”
When Kelly opened the door to her home nervously, she was surprised to find nobody home. It was dead quiet in the house, and it even seemed chilly. Kelly didn’t ponder where her family was since they never shared their plans with her.
She opened her bedroom door and walked in, and her calf knocked on something. She turned on the light and was taken aback. Her room was already small, but it was now filled with more stuff. Even the spot close to the door was blocked by Jackson’s old books and some rarely used furniture. If it wasn’t for the narrow path and the bed, one would have thought that she had walked into a storage room.
Crouching down, Kelly rubbed her calf where it was hit before proceeding to the desk. She fished out a key from her handbag and opened the drawer. This locked drawer was her only secret base. Back then, she hadn’t considered keeping the baby, so everything she had received from the hospital had been kept in it. Fortunately, her parents weren’t so sick that they’d break open her locked drawer.
Kelly retrieved her pregnancy planner, closed the drawer, and locked it again. However, she failed to notice a piece of medical report slipping out of her hand and falling beneath the desk.
