Chapter 59
What was this? Was this a confession? Kelly was stunned, her head spinning from Leon’s words. Suddenly, she stopped and told herself to calm down. Leon didn’t mention that he liked her. His statement was ambiguous, and their relationship began as an accident. She concluded this wasn’t a confession of his feelings. As she reminded herself not to overanalyze the situation, she told herself to calm down again. Kelly suppressed the turbulence in her heart, lest she give herself unrealistic ideas.
Leon added, “So, don’t let your imagination run wild because of what I said that day. It was true that I married you out of responsibility, but I’ve not regretted this decision even until now.”
All of a sudden, Kelly straightened out her thoughts through his words. Apart from her feelings for him, there was another reason she lacked the courage to face him for days. She was worried that she’d be a burden to him. Leon could have married a woman more compatible with him, but he was forced to marry Kelly because of her pregnancy. Very often, she wondered if he regretted this decision, and today, he gave her the answer. She felt as though someone had caught her restless feelings and pacified her, and her empty heart was instantly filled.
Tears stung her eyes, and she lowered her head to avoid his gaze. She was afraid he would see her reddened eyes. She used to be strong in the past. No one cared about her, so she wouldn’t cry easily because nobody would comfort her, anyway. However, it seemed like she was becoming more touchy-feely now.
Suddenly, he cupped her face with his palms, forcing her to lift her head and meet his eyes. He looked into her teary eyes. “Why are you crying?”
Kelly pouted. “I’m not crying.”
“What’s this, then?” Leon ran his fingertip over the corner of her eye, and a drop of tear clung to it. Kelly was caught red-handed and was tongue-tied, but Leon was patient with her. “Do you know the way to avoid conflicts between people?”
“How?” Kelly had no idea why he brought up this topic.
“Communication,” Leon’s voice was kind and enticing. “Do you know how much effort I spent to figure out what was on your mind? There’s a great difference between the thought processes of men and women. Furthermore, I’m eight years older than you, and there’s a generation gap between us. My test questions weren’t as difficult as guessing your thoughts.” Kelly couldn’t stifle her laughter.
“Oh, you’re laughing now, huh?” Leon put on a serious expression, and she wiped the smile off her face while lowering her head as though she was admitting her mistake. “This could be solved with just one word from you, but I had to spend so much effort to guess. It’s time that I guessed it right. If I didn’t, were you planning to avoid…”
“No,” she answered diffidently.
“That’s why communication between people is important, especially between husband and wife. Should there be an issue in the future, you should tell me directly. Tell me immediately if something is bothering you. Otherwise, how can I coax you?” He wanted to coax her. This made her feel as though they were dating, and her cheeks burned.
“Regardless, I intend to maintain this marriage for the rest of my life. What about you?” Leon asked.
The words “for the rest of my life” struck Kelly like a thunderbolt. She wanted to be with him for the rest of her life, but she was worried that he would quit halfway through the journey. Realizing that he was waiting for her answer, she bobbed her head. “Yes, me too.”
“Okay. It’s my turn to ask you now,” he said.
Kelly gave him a confused look. What was he going to ask? He sounded like a teacher questioning his student.
“The guy who’s in the same major as you but isn’t in your class. Do you like him?” Leon questioned.
Kelly was so shocked that she almost jumped. “I… How did you find out?”
Wearing a straight face, he replied, “Don’t bother about…”
Kelly shook her head nervously. “N-No, I don’t like… You just need to tell me whether you will have feelings for him.”
The knot between Leon’s brows eased up when he heard her answer. “That’s great. Otherwise…”
“Otherwise, what?”
Leon stared at her clueless face.
