Chapter 57

By someone who was in the same major as Kelly but wasn't her classmate, like she had been.

The next day, Leon and Ved were on campus and immediately recognized Jude. The guys explained how he was walking with a few others in front of Leon, and Leon overheard their conversation.

“Jude, why didn’t Kelly come when you asked her to join us for dinner? She’d always come in the past.”

“Didn’t I already tell you that she’s busy?” Jude answered in frustration.

“Was she really busy, or did she not want to come? Since you have a girlfriend, I notice she’s staying away from you.”

“The last time, we were betting on how long she would continue to have a crush on you. Looks like it’s less than two months. You’re not that charming, after all.”

“Don’t put it that way. If Jude isn’t charming, Kelly wouldn’t have held a torch for him for two years. I think she’s playing hard to get, just to get your attention.”

“Exactly. Look, Jude was in a daze last night during dinner. That was because he was affected by her.”

“That’s nonsense,” Jude denied.

Their voices drifted off as they walked away. Behind them, Leon thought deeply.

As it turned out, Jude didn’t like Kelly. Instead, it was Kelly who had a crush on him. In the end, she had no choice but to marry Leon because she was pregnant.

In the following days, Kelly avoided Leon, worried that she couldn’t control her feelings and wanted more from him. She had wasted so much time on Jude that she didn’t want to make the same mistake twice. Once a person’s feelings had been played with, they would be more careful the next time they offered their feelings. Undoubtedly, Leon sensed the change in her behavior. She would avoid him warily, like a timid animal, whenever he got close.

In the evening, they had dinner together. Kelly buried her head in the food, trying to finish eating as quickly as possible. In contrast, Leon ate slowly and gracefully while watching her. Kelly knew he was watching her, and a chill ran down her spine. Wondering if she was eating too much, she slowed down her eating speed. She didn’t even dare to get seconds and almost choked on a piece of cornbread.

“It’s the weekend tomorrow. Come with me to the supermarket,” Leon said.

“Huh?” Kelly looked up at him. “Why are we going to the supermarket?”

“We’re almost out of groceries. Let’s replenish some over the weekend, as well as other daily necessities,” Leon replied.

Kelly wondered if he was hinting that she was eating too much. She stared at the food on her plate, feeling bitter inside. Even though she was cutting down on food, she might not even like cornbread anymore.

“Okay.” After she replied, even the cornbread in her mouth seemed tasteless.

When they were done with dinner, she insisted on doing the dishes. At least, she could use her cheap labor to avoid seeming overly reliant on him.

“No, you should study.” Meanwhile, Leon had no idea why she insisted on doing the dishes.

“Leon, let me do it!” Kelly snatched the sponge from him, but somehow, she flung the bubbles onto her own eyes.

“Oudi!” She gasped and wanted to rub her eyes.

Leon’s face turned somber, and he stopped her. “Don’t move. Close your eyes.”

Despite the burning pain in her eyes, Kelly didn’t move. She heard the sounds of water flowing. Then, he cleaned her eyelids with a wet towel.

As her eyes were closed, her other senses were heightened. She could sense Leon in front of her as he gently wiped her eyes. His unique pine wood fragrance traveled up her nose, and she could even feel his soft breathing.
