Chapter 54
Melissa was rendered speechless, thinking that Kelly could be rather annoying sometimes.
“No, I saw admiration in your eyes. The way you look at Professor Butler was as though he was the best thing in the world.”
Kelly was taken aback, and Melissa leaned in, asking in a sickeningly sweet tone, “Did you fall for Professor Butler?”
At first, she merely wanted to sound her out and already imagined the embarrassed look on Kelly’s face after hearing her. Then, she would shove her and tell her off for speaking nonsense.
To her surprise, Kelly was silent for a few seconds before replying, “Falling for him is a piece of cake.”
Students admired Leon because he was a professor, in addition to his handsome features. Setting those reasons aside, Kelly noticed that he had many other positive points after interacting with him. He was knowledgeable, respectful toward women, emotionally stable, and tolerant. Furthermore, he treated Kelly better than anyone else. Like aged whiskey, his personality turned out better than she imagined with every interaction.
While Kelly was pondering, her gaze suddenly paused on a spot. Standing close by, Leon was next to a pillar with a hand in his pocket. His deep and gentle eyes were fixed on her, and he appeared as warm as a summer breeze.
“That’s Professor Butler. He must be waiting for you.” Melissa had seen him as well, tugging Kelly in excitement. She felt as though she was a fan, basking in the excitement of Kelly and Leon’s marriage and rooting for their relationship.
Leon approached them.
“I’m going to keep an eye out for you.” Tacitly, Melissa scurried to a corner, looking around sneakily and watching out for them seriously.
Kelly watched as Leon paced toward her. After she admitted her feelings, she felt even more tremulous. His conversation with Julian was still fresh on her mind. Even though she already knew those facts, she had a different thought.
“Hello, Leon,” she greeted in a soft voice.
Leon wore a warm expression as he whipped out the items he had prepared in his pocket before giving them to her. Seeing two candies on his palm, Kelly was taken aback for a moment.
“I wanted to give them to you this morning, but you left so quickly,” Leon said.
Leon’s eyes were bright and clear, shimmering slightly. “The smell of formalin in the specimen room is very strong, and you’re pregnant now. Have some candies to get rid of the smell.”
The candy wrapping was light green, and it shone under the light.
“Thank you, Leon,” Kelly accepted the candies.
Leon noticed that she seemed to be in low spirits. “Do you feel unwell?”
Kelly shook her head. “No. I was seated in the room, but I felt better after getting out of that place.”
“That’s good.” Leon was relieved. “I still have work to do in the office. I’ll pick you up at the same spot after classes.”
“Okay,” Kelly replied.
Seeing her reaction, he wanted to stroke her head, but he stopped himself. Instead, he turned and left.
When he was gone, only then did Kelly have the guts to look at him from behind. The candies in her palm made her feel sweet but despondent at the same time. She lamented inwardly, “Melissa, how can I not fall for him when he always keeps me on his mind?”
“What did Professor Butler give you, Kelly? Show me.” Melissa skipped over.
“Oh, candies. Professor Butler is a kind adult, and I’m one. Give me a candy.”
Instantly, Kelly retracted her hand. “No.”
Melissa exclaimed, “You’re such a Scrooge, Kelly. Don’t you remember I shared my snacks with you before?”
Holding the candies tightly, Kelly walked away briskly as she was worried that Melissa would snatch them away.
“They’re just candies from Professor Butler. Do you have to be so protective over them?”
Squabbling playfully, they headed toward the library.
