Chapter 150

The first lesson involved eight obstacle courses spanning a quarter-mile. The instructor led the class to the first, a series of closely spaced wooden stakes. Emma observed them with her usual impassivity, though a chilling coldness simmered in her eyes. Dummy's death during a 400-meter steeplechase—a death caused by these very types of obstacles—weighed heavily on her.

The narrow gaps between the stakes presented a challenge, especially for those with shorter legs. The instructor demonstrated a straddle jump, emphasizing precise distance judgment and controlled leg movement. He landed gracefully, earning admiration. He then asked for volunteers.

A tall boy easily cleared several stakes, but lost his balance on the last, falling. The instructor sternly corrected him, "Quality is as important as speed! Falling here is dangerous; imagine a river or fire—it could be fatal! Remember, haste makes waste!" The boy gritted his teeth. The girls, being smaller, struggled more with balance and speed, prompting the instructor to urge them to hasten their pace.

Emma, however, moved with effortless grace, her core strength evident in her swift, controlled movements. The instructor praised her performance, highlighting her technique.

During training, a group of officers, including Captain Richard Rivera—a highly respected soldier and battlefield hero—approached the training ground. He had come to see Emma, having seen her photos. He discreetly observed her superior performance, feeling a surge of pride but suppressing any overt acknowledgment to avoid drawing unwanted attention to her. He reassured the instructors regarding the new students' capabilities.

By evening, everyone was exhausted. The training, which included high-altitude and dizziness resistance exercises, pushed their physical and mental limits. The reputation of Charon Military School as a grueling institution was well-earned. After a month, everyone mastered the wooden stakes, and seven additional obstacles—trenches, low walls, high-plank jumps, ladders, wooden bridges, high walls, and low pile nets—were introduced.

Emma aced the first monthly test, though she missed Liam dearly, contacting him only by phone. She planned to surprise him upon her return to Icovine Estate.

The next day's exam focused on speed. The students were eager, except for Emma, haunted by the memory of Dummy's death. Unbeknownst to others, she struggled with distracting thoughts.

The instructor announced the exam, emphasizing the importance of breaking records. Bob Ball, with his usual gentle demeanor, wished Emma luck. Erza, a boisterous boy, challenged her to a friendly wager, prompting a cold response from Emma. He then warned her about Riley Lewis from Class Two, a formidable competitor who had almost broken Emma's best time. Emma, aware of Riley's dedication and skill, remained composed but resolute.
